To give friends 2yo an age 3+ gift?

I'm not a mum so please tell me if it would be bad to gift my friends little girl age 20 months this toy:

tenderleaftoys.co.uk/collections/100-plastic-free/products/chicken-coop

It says age 3 presumably because of small pieces? So would this be a bad gift or would she be able to play with it eg supervised? If not what would be a nice age appropriate alternative?
Thanks!!

I wouldn't tbh. I think its the sort of thing only parents can break the rules on.

Books? Book token?

PermanentTemporary · 13/12/2021 22:14

Ooh! Brio train or duplo at that age- fantastic

FortunesFave · 13/12/2021 22:15

It's lovely but it's probably marked as 3 plus because the animals present a choking hazard. I'd find something for her age group.

Notajogger · 13/12/2021 22:15

Nope, looks fine!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 13/12/2021 22:15

Ask them.

FortunesFave · 13/12/2021 22:16

They have this tenderleaftoys.co.uk/collections/18-months/products/stacking-garden-friends which is for 18 months plus and is lovely too.

Notajogger · 13/12/2021 22:17

If the parents think it's a bit old, they can keep it back for a few months.
Depends on the kid too, some are at the "level" of toys for slightly older age groups.

LizzieSiddal · 13/12/2021 22:18

To me it looks like the eggs in the tray are very small and would be a chocking hazard so no I wouldn’t give it to any 2 year old.

LizzieSiddal · 13/12/2021 22:19

They are gorgeous toys though!

CasperGutman · 13/12/2021 22:30

Just about the only age guidance i ever take notice of on you packaging is the "unsuitable for children under 36 months due to small parts" warning. The rest of them are about the developmental stage a child needs to be at to get the most out of the toy, but that one is about avoiding a child choking and dying.

Rittersport · 13/12/2021 22:59

Great feedback thank you!! Definitely don't want to purchase a choking hazard! I like the peacock and also the stacking garden friends, the pieces definitely do look a bit chunkier so hopefully not mouth sized 😊 thank you!!

The first one is definitely too small and would be a choking hazard. I love this one and it would last for years to come as its educational.

DeepaBeesKit · 13/12/2021 23:14

Oh god I definitely would have. At that age you need to supervise them with almost anything anyway and age ratings on toys mean the age the child can have it unsupervised.

Companies also tend to list almost every thing as 3+ because the additional costs to comply with the extra regulations applicable to toys for younger babies can make stuff unprofitable.

If the parents are fussed they can keep it back til the child is older.

DeepaBeesKit · 13/12/2021 23:18

To all the people who don't buy this stuff, do you only have one child? When you have an older child and a younger one you inevitably have lots of "older" toys around a younger child.

TheMagicPudding · 13/12/2021 23:20

I have a 14 month old and I would let her play with this...

I would maybe remove the smaller of the pieces until she was a bit older.

AnotherOneWithNoGoodName · 13/12/2021 23:25

Ask the parents. Some would be fine, some would not, as this thread shows!

Marimaur · 13/12/2021 23:52

It’s lovely, the parents can give it to her later if it’s too old for her.

No I have two Dc. I’d just never buy a present which wasn’t specifically for that child, I don’t see the point when there are lots of alternatives!

StruggleStreet · 14/12/2021 07:20

Yes, my two year old would love this! I just supervise her with anything that might be a choking hazard. The parents can always hold it back if they don’t think she’s ready.

ItoldyouIwastrouble · 14/12/2021 07:26

The stacking garden friends that fortunes posted is gorgeous!

CeriBerry · 14/12/2021 10:46

I’ve got this exact gift for my boyfriend’s two year old. She’s been two since June though and we’ll supervise her whenever she’s playing with it.
