To wonder if other schools do nothing the week before Christmas?

I’m seeing on a few posts people saying that it doesn’t matter as kids do nothing the week before Christmas. My school definitely does - we’d be in deep shit if we didn’t follow the curriculum up to the last day?

I couldn't agree with you more.

We just keep going as usual with perhaps the occasional Christmas colouring activity when they have finished their work. It’s easier to keep them busy and doing normal school stuff I find. Sometimes they have a short film on the last afternoon but usually they prefer to keep doing activities.

We have stuff going on outside of lesson time - Christmas lunch, for example - but I always teach to the bitter end, as to most of my colleagues, if only to avoid hundreds of hyped up teenagers and the ensuing mayhem.

My daughter came home on Friday happy as anything, apparently they'd done no work all day. Played games, coloured pictures, watched The Grinch with Jim Carey.

She's in primary as she's 8.
I did think it was a bit odd as it wasn't the last day. When I were a kid in the 80s/90s, last day was muck about day at my school.

As normal here too (besides a Christmas party afternoon). It used to be DVDs and colouring in back in the day but not anymore.

PixieAndProsecco · 13/12/2021 07:52

Couldn't agree more.
I am still teaching a full maths curriculum (1.5 hours 4 days a week). My literacy has had to give to accommodate our show rehearsal and filming (no parents allowed in so this is the next best thing) but I still have spelling and reading each day. We're also finishing our science topic and completing our science focus.

We are in until the 22nd and I'll still be teaching all Monday and then most of Tuesday - I might make it slightly more interesting but it'll still be lessons.

Jenster03 · 13/12/2021 07:52

We usually carry on as normal until the last couple of days.
That said 'normal' in the last week might be more christmassy themed maths or writing, and making Xmas cards or calendars.
The last day might be a quiz, party and film.

@FissionMailed maybe their teacher was off sick or they had earned a lot of golden time

PixieAndProsecco · 13/12/2021 07:53

*finishing our sciene topic and completing our enterprise.

DD came home on Friday saying she'd watched films most of the day. She is in secondary! It does annoy me that we are frequently told that there's so much curriculum to get through and not enough time, but then they spend at least a week messing about. DD gets bored when they watch films if she's seen them before, plus they often don't watch the entire film (because lessons aren't long enough) so what is the point. She takes a book with her to read, but shs could do that at home in peace.

Maybe I should let her stayhome this week.

Their teacher was there, she was the one that organised the fun stuff.
I've no idea what they'll be doing this week, I can't imagine it'll just be fun stuff all week.

cliffdiver · 13/12/2021 07:58

We have nativity performances, Christmas lunch and The Big Sing.

But other than that, it's full curriculum (including new learning) until Friday lunchtime.

twelly · 13/12/2021 08:00

I think it varies from school to school - and often teacher to teacher. I think there are some fantastic teachers but I think there are also some appalling teachers who at the slightest opportunity do as little as possible and these need to leave the proffession

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 13/12/2021 08:01

They have Christmas lunch on Wed and Panto Thursday afternoon. (Last afternoon). They also have lessons and tests, like a normal week.
