To hate seeing children pranked with Christmas presents on video?

These videos keep coming up on fb as “hilarious”.

Children are opening their presents to see a most wanted present such as a PS5. They dance around excited and you can literally feel happiness radiating off them. Then the parents tell them to open the box and it’s bricks or something equally stupid inside

The children are heartbroken and gutted whilst the parents are sitting there in hysterics and laughing like crazy.

I hate seeing those sort of things and think it’s cruel.

So is it cruel or am I being a spoilsport?

YANBU. I despise the whole genre of people playing pranks on their children. I can’t see how exploiting kids emotionally for internet exposure is anything other than abusive.

NashvilleQueen · 13/12/2021 07:41

Videoing all this kind of shit for likes and comments drives me insane. We have become so vacuous. But yes OP I agree. Cruel and unpleasant

MargaretThursday · 13/12/2021 07:45

I don't find it funny but I would expect most have bought it (otherwise how would they have the box) and the child will get it later.

tallduckandhandsome · 13/12/2021 07:48

I think you’re missing a key point - which is that the kids in the prank do get the actual present afterwards.

I’t’s not something I would do but YABU to assume you know what makes a family tick better than they do.

I know some people who would this hilarious if it was done to them (as long as they get the gift afterwards).

Silverswirl · 13/12/2021 07:51

It literally is abuse in my eyes. Awful scarring behaviour that will Undermine the trust that child will have for their parents.
If a child doesn’t feel safe around their parent or feels they are going to be let down and mocked, that stays with them for life.
I’ve seen videos in the past where the adult tells the child they’ve eaten all their Halloween sweets / Easter chocolate or whatever. Cue confused and upset child as the parent keeps saying they are it whilst the kid was in bed. When the child is crying hysterically it’s revealed as a ‘joke’ oh yes, bloody hilarious.
I knew a couple who shouted in their kids faces to wake them up with a real shock. Kids woke up in a panic and burst out crying. Parents laughing hysterically and put it in fb.
Lost all respect for them that instant.

It just teaches your kids not to trust you

Gretaburley · 13/12/2021 08:05

My ex bil once came home from the supermarket and gave his 3 yrs old ds a bag saying here’s a present for you.
It was a cabbage, dn was really upset.
My dsis gave bil a stern telling off.

howitis · 13/12/2021 08:06

I also detest the fake scratch cards. Innocent people thinking they have won millions. I would never do that to someone I loved.

rrhuth · 13/12/2021 08:08

It is abuse.

I know someone who had this (not filmed back then) and it has affected their enjoyment of celebrations.

A joke is only funny if everyone is laughing.

sageandbasil · 13/12/2021 08:09

So so mean and unnecessary

misshoney37 · 13/12/2021 08:12

People who exploit their kids for likes are gross in general but this seems particularly cruel to me. Imagine the disappointment and confusion of a small child. Why would you do that to someone you're mean to love and protect?
Luckily I haven't seen anyone do it irl but I have seen a few strangers do it on Tik Tok and YouTube. Horrible parenting.

Tal45 · 13/12/2021 08:13

Dick move.

00100001 · 13/12/2021 08:16

We've only ever done the reverse.

Once hid a much wanted computer game inside a box of chocolates for example.

fluffythedragonslayer · 13/12/2021 08:25

Awful awful awful. I hate all pranks of any kind, directed at anyone. But for parents to do this to their kids, awful.

Antsgomarching · 13/12/2021 08:28

Its awful, and I’m no bleeding heart earth mother. Its cruel and vile.

DrSbaitso · 13/12/2021 08:45

The best thing you can do is not watch and not share. They want clicks and views and interaction and they don't care how they get them or what the nature of it all is. They're probably working on a model of offence and outrage more than appreciation.

They want oxygen. Don't give it.

RevolvingPivot · 13/12/2021 09:03

@Soubriquet

link

That is the one I’m on about but it was part of many

Thanks for the link as I was going to ask what videos there were.

Did they definitely not get the console?

My DB and SIL took my dd9 out last weekend and yesterday he brought round some sweets they had bought her then but she had forgotten.

I felt upset for her sister dd11. Mental I know (I am). This would make me sick if someone did this to them x

Abusive, disgusting behaviour and seriously needs stopped! These people should be charged with causing unnecessary suffering to a child
