Dummy for a two day old

Is it safe for a newborn (currently two days old) to have a dummy? He would not settle unless latched and got really worked up any time put down until soother was introduced.

I understand the advice about established breastfeeding but we are combination feeding. I just want to know if it is safe to give a newborn a dummy.

I am really interested to read other’s experiences. I do not want to hijack this thread though for a new mum who is wanting advice on a specific issue.

I am unable do clicky links (sorry to the pp who asked), but the unicef current advice is that a dummy is not advisable before 4 weeks if trying to breastfeed, as it may inhibit establishing breast feeding. There is no link between dummies beyond those very early days and breastfeeding. And having read responses here, it seems as though even the UNICEF advice doesn’t apply across the board.

I’ve not read anything to suggest it’s unsafe to introduce a dummy at this, or any, age. Indeed the opposite seems to be the case.

Congratulations on your baby OP.

@WinterOfOurDiscoTent

I wouldn't say it isn't safe but having recently read a thread about trying to get children to give up dummies before it harms their teeth too much, I'd think twice about introducing one in the first place. No judgement either way but I'd see how it goes first.
My son had one for 3 years and his teeth are fine.

My DD had to stay under the jaundice light so the hospital promoted a dummy for that time. Would she take it…no. But I believe it’s safe yes. I can’t see how it would interfere with BFing since BF babies are obsessed with the boob. Combo feeding may affect your milk supply though unless you’re expressing as well.

Yep very safe, as others have said reduced the risk of SIDS apparently

My eldest was a very sucky baby and had one after a couple of days. It saved my life!
If she was hungry she spat the dummy out and rooted, so got a boob instead.

It won't harm but for the first 2 weeks it's best not to to allow for you to respond to feeding cues. Enjoy your new arrival!
