To keep my washing machine?

NC for this as I have already discussed with a few friends so its now a bit outing.

House buyers have been round this morning to measure up and we had a bit of a chat, while in the kitchen lady comments on my lovely washing machine and says “it’s much better than the one we are leaving behind”.

For context the machine is a good brand, bought 3 months ago and I intentionally budgeted more for the one with the little door to add forgotten socks etc. I had no intention of leaving it and did not include it on the seller information.

I told my buyer the machine would be coming with me, and she was all astonishment. It turns out they have already agreed to leave their white goods to their buyer and had just assumed I would do the same.

Two friends say I am not being unreasonable but one says I am selling my house and will have enough to replace it, plus it would be easier for everyone in the chain to leave large appliances so what’s the fuss?

So please people of mumsnet, AIBU to want to take my machine with me??

Anecdotally and from talking to estate agents I thought it was common practice to leave white goods behind/negotiate a price for them.

We've just bought a place and were a little disappointed that the vendors planned to take theirs with them (not majorly so, just another bit of faff for us to organise). A couple of weeks later they contacted us to say they'd be leaving them behind anyway. Result.

Don't leave it if you don't want to OP

I vividly remember when my parents were selling their house, the buyer was all excited because we had a bird and she had always wanted a bird. She was so glad she was finally getting a bird.

She was gutted when we said “Urm no….he’s coming with us” Hmm

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 12/12/2021 11:56

@Soubriquet That’s hilarious!! What sort of bird was he? Tell me he was a peacock. I’d love a 🦚

GoodnightGrandma · 12/12/2021 11:57

If it’s not intergated I’d expect to take it.

2ndtimemum2 · 12/12/2021 11:57

@Oldraver

OP My son was desperate for the gimmicky sock hole and is sorely disappointed by our practical machine
I have the same washing machine and I love it especially with a toddler and a teenage it's been a godsend when you find an odd sock lying around you just pop it in
Handsoffmyspincycle · 12/12/2021 11:59

@Soubriquet DDog has now been warned to be on her best behaviour or else I’ll be leaving her behind in the washing machine gap 😂

(Joke obvs)

You could tell them they can keep it for the replacement price. That way, neither of you have the hassle of moving a machine, and you can order a new one to be delivered on the day you move into your new house.

But no discount! You would be doing them a favour.

ChiefStockingStuffer · 12/12/2021 12:01

Someone seriously thought they'd get to keep your bird?! Wow!

Handsoffmyspincycle · 12/12/2021 12:01

@MintJulia great suggestion, I think I will do this since it resolves the issue of the convenience

We took our integrated dishwasher when we moved house! The buyers were clear that this was our plan. No issues at all. The space we left behind could take either integrated or freestanding, and we left the front behind so they could decide what they wanted to do.

RitaFires · 12/12/2021 12:20

I think it's a bit cheeky to assume, it is common to offer to negotiate a price for white goods but that's usually so the seller doesn't have the hassle of moving them. As a buyer you'd usually be prepared for any non integrated appliances left behind to be a bit shit, the convenience is not having to fork out to replace them all right away and making the move a little easier.

I wouldn't listen to your friend, a house sale is a business transaction, if you want to be particularly nice you can leave a card and/or bottle of bubbly for the buyer not a new appliance.

Longingforatikihut · 12/12/2021 12:25

When I moved into my last rental the conditions were that they wouldn't replace white goods but I could of course take any replacements with me. When I moved out and took all my stuff they tried to accuse me of theft even though I'd asked them to remove the washer to make space for one I already owned and their gas cooker nearly gassed me to death within days of moving in and was condemned.

Thankfully I'm out of the rental trap.

or you could just cut out the middle man and they could buy one themselves?

Our seller wanted rid of her washing machine and some other bits. She specifically asked us (via the solicitor) if it was OK to leave it. You're 100 percent right.

Lucked · 12/12/2021 17:38

This reminds me of the offer I got that wanted my sofas, king bed, desk and office chair left. I mean they can ask but you can also say no.
