to cancel uk new years holiday?

Hi everyone
I have 3 days before the free cancellation of my holiday in an apartment on the north east coast runs out,
The holiday is due to take place 26th December (for 4 days).
Just don't know whether to hold off cancelling - however I am concerned that covid restrictions could dictate that I am not not allowed to leave my area post free cancellation. Should I take the risk and not cancel in the hope this won't happen. What would you do? Thanks in advance for your advice.

I'd go. Just go and have a wonderful time!

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 11/12/2021 16:50

If you go into lockdown then you will be able to get your money back anyway surely?

Stripyhoglets1 · 11/12/2021 16:50

I'd go. You should be able to cancel if we get banned from travelling. Or you say to the apartment owner that you will be travelling anyway and if they say you can't stay if against rules - then they will need to refund you.

LawnFever · 11/12/2021 16:55

I’d go, have a lovely time :)

SummerHouse · 11/12/2021 16:55

I would just assume I was going. Is it Whitby? Staithes? No way on god's green earth would I cancel a holiday there. I am hopelessly optimistic but I don't see them restricting travel.

Etinoxaurus · 11/12/2021 16:56

If you can cancel without losing money now, I would. Depending on how you’d travel there and what home vs holiday apartment is like. There’s also a very good chance you’ll either be restricted in what you can do once there, or not be able to go.
If you’re driving there from in small flat in an un picturesque part of the world and the holiday is in somewhere you’d happily cocoon in with Netflix hotel quality beds and beautiful views and scenery it’s tempting.

Tal45 · 11/12/2021 16:59

Go, go, go! If we go into lockdown they won't be able to host you so you should get a refund anyway.
After the current Christmas party debacle they won't even ban Christmas parties let alone have a full lockdown - I think they will literally go to any lengths now to avoid it.

Darbs76 · 11/12/2021 17:02

I’d cancel.

Suzanne999 · 11/12/2021 17:05

I’d go. If there is a lockdown ( I don’t think there will be) they’d either refund you or give you the option of another date.

StrangerThanSpring · 11/12/2021 17:08

Are you going by public transportation or car?

What will you do when there?

If you are driving there, staying in the apartment and going for walks etc. I think it is fine.

If you are taking the train, staying in the city, planning on going shopping etc I would cancel.

battenburg100 · 11/12/2021 17:27

Aaah thanks for all your positive messages - I guess I always think the worse case scenario - I suppose the apartment host would allow us to tranfer to another date if we aren't allowed to leave our area.
Its Whitby I'm goine to - I was hoping for museums and restaurants and pubs and a bit of shopping, but yes the beach and walking on the moors would be lovely too.
It's so sad how holidays have become so difficult for us all isn't it.

So I have some questions first, can you afford to lose the cost of the holiday if infection rates rocket? Have you spoken to the apartment owners about their own policies regarding restrictions and what they plan to do?

IF you have invested a lot of your money into this holiday, then I would move it to the late spring and summer to be on the safe side. You can be pretty sure by then things will be much better.

If you need a holiday, and you are relaxed about restrictions ie you will enjoy it regardless of whether things are more restricted then I would go for it! The change of scene and rest will do you good, and January looks bleak so best to enjoy everything now.

I am going on holiday on Tuesday - 6 hours of flights and I am going anyway as I refuse to live my life cowering from covid. I have been vaccinated, we have all had covid, so what more can I do? Get on and enjoy life

Lasair · 11/12/2021 17:42

Can you link your evidence please that says there will be a lockdown?

Good questions - yes I could afford - just about - to lose the cost of the holiday, but wouldn't be happy about it!
The apartment owner is quite new to the game so I hope he would be understanding to the situation if restrictions dictate we are not allowed to leave our area.
Yes I find I enjoy myself wherever I am, especially if I'm in good company - I suppose I need to manage my expectations, that if I get to go to Whitby, I might not be able to do all the things I had hoped and planned to do.
I love your attitude about not letting covid dicate your holiday plans! Maybe I need to be a bit more like that!

We're going away for new year too and won't cancel. If there's restrictions you should get a refund anyway.

Scarby9 · 11/12/2021 17:53

Just in passing, OP, the wonderful Whitby Museum with its plesiosaur and witch's withered hand is shut from 5 December to late February. Sorry.

StrangerThanSpring · 11/12/2021 17:59

@Lasair

Can you link your evidence please that says there will be a lockdown?
No one is saying there definitely will be a lockdown but it is all over the news that cases are rising, so people are worried about what will happen if there is another lockdown. It's called risk management.
amillionmenonmars · 11/12/2021 18:01

If I was traveling in my own car to a self catering place I would go. 100%. And I am ultra cautious.

miltonj · 11/12/2021 18:07

Yes go and have a brill time!

I'm travelling to the UK very soon, not returning for a month or so, fully aware that it may be quite difficult to return and new rules may come in again re travel. But I am ready to see my family and have a lovely time. I think you have to take careful risks sometimes.

Honeyroar · 11/12/2021 18:33

I think you'll be fine, but might be better thinking about self catering options just in case. I don't think there will be any forms of lockdown just more social distancing and masks if anything. You'll still get the walks and views if nothing else..

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/12/2021 18:55

I wouldn't cancel. I've just got back from a UK holiday and it was lovely just being somewhere different.

Fairylights25 · 11/12/2021 19:00

In that case I would make a plan of what you can do if restrictions were in place, fish and chips by the sea (chip shops will remain open whatever happens) a winter BBQ is always fun with hot chocolate and bobble hats. Walks etc. Hopefully most things are open even if we are spacing out more etc so you can still do most of what you are looking for. I never look forward to anything unless I am actually there these days, as we can't plan very well. So I would also make a plan B if you need to stay at home - just in case.

My guess some restrictions will kick in around new year or just before.

MadeOfStarStuff · 11/12/2021 19:06

If you don’t live in England it would be good to find out what the host’s policy is if you’re in lockdown but they’re not. If the location of the holiday is in lockdown it’s more clear cut that they should refund you.

But I would go in a heartbeat!

SeaDreaming · 11/12/2021 19:11

Keep it open.
I've booked to go to Whitby for Xmas; fingers crossed we both make it there OP!
