Was I unreasonable to open the parcel?

Lived in our rented house for 18 months, had lots of issues with old tenants turning up wanting their mail - not just the odd letter but piles and piles, think bank letters, debt, dwp, HMRC etc. They were running multiple businesses it seems in a variety of names, both company names and personal. My DP kept handing over their mail for the first 3 months until one day I happened to answer the door and told them where to go. Since then we've returned everything to sender.

However today DPD delivered a very expensive iPhone. DP accepted it without looking at the name and the courier didn't ask. It's December... we're expecting parcels.

It was obviously a phone so we opened it to get provider info, I have now phoned the provider and reported it as fraudulent.

However, I'm slightly worried about the repercussions now as I'm sure they will turn up wanting the phone. We still have it as the provider won't get someone to pick it up until they have investigated the fraud. Despite this there is no way I could've handed the phone over knowing they are using our address.

What would you have done in this situation?

I think you did the right thing and were right to contact the company. The previous tenants sound dodgy and if they’ve not lived there for 18 months it seems strange to order such an expensive item to the wrong address. My guess is they wanted to collect the phone from you but to them deny collection and report the iPhone as lost/ stolen. If they come knocking I would just say that you have returned the phone to the sender and no longer have it.

They want the contract at a different address so they can’t be traced/can avoid payment.

That's a good point actually, I hadn't even considered they might try and report it lost/ stolen. In which case my DP could've ended up in trouble. Yes I think they are extremely dodgy. The estate agent changed the lock before we moved in as he caught the previous tenant trying to get in to get his mail after he moved out
