Would you take dog the vets? (Gross picture)

Woke up this morning, dog was fine, she hasn't cried or whinged or made any indication she is in pain but I noticed a bit of blood on her bed, maybe the size of a 10p but like it had rubbed there not soaked through if that makes sense so I checked her over and then I saw her chin!!

Like I say it isn't bleeding anymore and she doesn't seem bothered but I think we should go vets anyway, partner disagrees and says if it isn't bleeding and isn't bothering her to leave it and see how it goes.

Would you take her the vets or wait?

That's shit. Not knowing what caused it is horrid.

I hope she's OK after the vet, that she forgives you quickly Smile

HoppingPavlova · 11/12/2021 10:41

Looks like it needs a few stitches.

Prescottdanni123 · 11/12/2021 11:06

I'd definitely take her to the vets

SoupDragon · 11/12/2021 11:09

My dog has had large puncture wounds from a dog attack on a few occasions and, whilst they haven't needed stitching, they did need antibiotics so I'd take yours just for that. The vet can clean it and look at it properly.

PeterPomegranate · 11/12/2021 11:15

Definitely vets. I split my chin open years ago and it didn’t hurt much. But when I touched it I had blood on my fingers and when I looked in the mirror I could see the layer of fat under my skin. The minor injuries unit stuck it together with steri strips.

My point is that it might not hurt much but can still be deep.

RVN123 · 11/12/2021 11:22

Another RVN here. Yep, vets today! Will definitely need inspected for foreign body, could be a puncture wound with stick or similar, will need flushed out and cleaned - if it happened a while ago the edges will not be fresh enough to suture and may need debrided (roughed up) so that they are fresh again in order to be stitched and give it a chance to heal properly.
Look fairly deep.
If you had a similar cut on your chin you would probably want to see a doctor so its no different for your pet.
They may also give you antibiotics.

WeAllHaveWings · 11/12/2021 11:30

Definitely vets for that. We've just had ours back and forth for an ear injury that needed stitching. £430 so far 🤦🏻‍♀️. Thankfully insurance covers most of it.

Thetwomutts · 11/12/2021 11:53

Yeah normally I treat some quite bad wounds at home and my vet is happy with that, but this one I would take in, it looks deep.

Think it needs flushing to prevent infection and some stitches to close it - she could rip it open further way too easily with it being on the underside of the jaw

Vates · 11/12/2021 13:27

So glad to read that you're taking her in to see the vets. It does look deep and will need help to close. p.s. thank you for being a responsible owner. And no, not being sarcastic.

Medievalist · 11/12/2021 13:29

Absolutely.

Beautiful3 · 11/12/2021 13:53

Thats deep and quite open. She'll get an infection. Please take her to the vets.

FreedomFaith · 11/12/2021 14:02

Definitely phone the vets, but they may say to just clean with salty warm water. Our cat got a scratch on his shoulder a few months ago, it was deep, about an inch or so big and I thought it would need stitches although he didn't seem bothered by it. Vets were busy so asked us to clean it regularly with salty warm water and if it was still bad by Monday to bring him in. Safe to say it wasn't easy to clean a cats wound, but did manage well enough to stop it getting infected. But definitely ask.

Needs to see a vet today. Partner sounds horrible thinking she does not need to see a vet.
