Will the Police do anything if I call them?

New neighbour (opposite me) moved into our block of flats a few weeks ago. There's been persistent issues with loud music and regular parties ever since. Tonight I'm at the end of my tether... The loud music, shouting and screaming has been going on since 9pm. It's now 4.30am. I've been trying to sleep since 1am but I'm lying in bed and all I can here (windows closed) is the music and them shouting. If I open the window then you can here it clearly down the street as well. If I call 101 will they send someone out to have a word with them? I've already checked and our council only has a noise complaint service between 9-5 on weekdays 🙄

Try them!

youretwistingmymelonman · 11/12/2021 04:45

Yes, and you can hear a worryingly loud argument as well.

SnackSizeRaisin · 11/12/2021 04:46

Try them but if not, call the council in the morning.

vastgrandupgrade · 11/12/2021 05:38

You can try, but the police don’t usually deal with noise disturbance. It’s usually the council’s responsibility.

If it’s an ongoing issue, contact the council about it.

Bogeyes · 11/12/2021 05:38

Council don't give a toss

Evergreenblue · 11/12/2021 05:51

You can call 101 and just like the council I doubt they will do anything what so ever. I have quickly learned over the past year you are extremely lucky if they give a toss.
I have had an abusive drunk ex come round kicking my door and threatening me the police took 19 hours to turn up after I phoned to say I was scared and threatened (bit bloody late). After that teenager on my street were throwing for works at my house and at cars driving past, I called 101 and they claimed it was a noise issue and to call the council and not them 🙄. My elderly neighbors had a break in it took two days for them to turn up. The police are a joke! 🤬

Felix125 · 11/12/2021 05:57

Its mainly a council thing for noise.

However, the police will be able to go and see them in the first instance. If you phone them whilst the noise is on going, they will be able to see/hear it for themselves. Sometime the partying people become abusive to police at the time - which may work in your favour.

The only offence to look at is s5 public order if the swearing is clearly audible. Harassment offences have to be aimed at you directly really.

YourenutsmiLord · 11/12/2021 06:00

Are there other flat owners. Ear plugs do work quite well - have they all resorted to that.

felulageller · 11/12/2021 06:03

Music noise - no.

If 'shouting and screaming' is domestic abuse then yes. Even more so if there are children in the house.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 11/12/2021 06:06

No. I called when I had arsehole neighbours last year and they weren't interested. Even though there was shouting and screaming, kids in the house and a history of domestic abuse.

Did you say that it was a party that was noisy - or did you say that you thought there was a domestic violence incident ongoing?
Newhorizon21 · 11/12/2021 06:13

The council will take action if it's established that there is a pattern, report, report, report

Please don’t make up things to make the police come quicker, they could be diverted from an actual emergency
TillyTopper · 11/12/2021 06:29

It won't help you right now but log everything that happens in terms of noise. Date, time from, time to, the approx level and type of noise. Submit it to the council with a complain if it continues. That's so frustrating OP, having been in this situation myself I know what you are going through.

UsernameInTheTown · 11/12/2021 07:18

Yes. Police stopped dealing with noise nuisance, but have been told to start doing their job properly again apparently, so now take this seriously. Get it reported.

lisaandalan · 11/12/2021 08:54

Where do you live ?
Here in London we have a mobile noise nuisance number you can call. X

FreeBritnee · 11/12/2021 08:56

In my experience they do nothing and aren’t interested but you need to try.

IncompleteSenten · 11/12/2021 08:57

Hopefully it's stopped now but if they do it again, call the police.
They may come out, they may not. But if you don't call them there's no chance of them coming out!

hopeyouhaveabadday · 11/12/2021 09:13

Someone I know has been visited numerous times by the police due to noise complaints made. They have even lifted him and took him to the cells for the night as he was not doing as the police asked to turn down his music.

You will be sorted now OP but for next time yeah call 101 - and call them every time after. Also get in touch with the council come Monday. Take notes of when this is happening.

Uninterested · 11/12/2021 09:42

Hope you got some sleep OP.

Caulibean · 12/12/2021 02:25

Thanks for all the responses - the party and music Angry was still going strong at 5am. I tried calling 101 but couldn't get through. I then fashioned some temporary ear plugs and finally managed to get some sleep. Had to be awake a few hours later for work so have spent most of the day exhausted. Luckily they seem to be partied out and all has been quiet so far tonight. Thank goodness... Definitely speaking to the council on Monday though. This can't go on Sad
