School parties

At the school gate, lots of parents were unhappy about a work Christmas party going ahead for the teachers, while the school announced this week, all Christmas plays were cancelled due to covid risk. What do you think?

Do the teachers normally socialise in the school or are they in bubbles still? If they normally socialise in school it makes no difference, although insensitive for sure.

Bringing in hundreds of parents who don’t normally all socialise is an increased risk.

I’d be annoyed, yes.

Hankunamatata · 10/12/2021 21:09

Teachers usually meet for breaks and lunch in the staff room so Christmas lunch wont be much different

Sally872 · 10/12/2021 21:11

Work Christmas parties should be cancelled so would be a bit disappointed they haven't cancelled.

Cancelling kids parties also disappointing as ott in my opinion but any little extra protection would be understandable.

Keeping staff party but cancelling kids would really annoy me. Very hypocritical.

Thatsplentyjack · 10/12/2021 21:12

How do the parents know the teachers are still having their work Christmas parties. Doesn't matter anyway, adults can do what they like outside of working hours.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 10/12/2021 21:12

I'm a teacher we cancelled ours

Sally872 · 10/12/2021 21:12

@hankunamantata teachers here have staggered breaks and bubbles for staff room so they don't all see each other.

DSGR · 10/12/2021 21:13

I imagine they’ve cancelled nativity as they don’t want dozens of parents who don’t usually mix mixing together… therefore it could be a super spreader thing.
The teachers breathe each other’s air all day long

FellWanderer · 10/12/2021 21:13

Adults who normally spend all day with eachother anyway spending a few extra hours together for one night vs hundreds of additional adults coming into the school building....

I smell a fictitious story to start a teacher bashing thread. Why on earth would parents be told about a staff Christmas do?

If it's true, surely the parents can see the difference in a group of key workers who've been forced to work closely throughout the pandemic compared to allowing hundreds of parents on site into indoor spaces where social distancing would be impossible?

LethargicActress · 10/12/2021 21:15

I can understand parents being miffed, but teachers who already work together having a social event together as well is not the same as inviting lots of parents and grandparents into school.

That said, I’m happy our head teacher is allowing us to go ahead with the Christmas play, even if it is on a much smaller scale. But then it’s a small school, and I can see why an audience in a bigger school might not be advisable.

RobinPenguins · 10/12/2021 21:15

It’ll be an organised by the staff themselves and paid for by the staff themselves - not organised by, endorsed by or paid for by the school. I think that’s very different from some of the big corporate type events that are being cancelled.

(It’s ludicrous that the nativity has been cancelled, and not the staff’s fault).

HelloDulling · 10/12/2021 21:16

Staff already spend the day together, Covid is not more active at night.

That is very different to 100s of adults in the school hall.

Morechocmorechoc · 10/12/2021 21:16

It's all bonkers. Staff should have party. Kids should have nativity. They worked hard for it poor kids. Life goes on, nothing changing people should get in with it. No need to cancel anything, everyone is mad.

CristinaYangismySpiritAnimal · 10/12/2021 21:17

Oh here we go again. Is there any other profession that everybody feels they have a right to an opinion on in the same way as teaching?

TheCanyon · 10/12/2021 21:17

Ours have staggered breaks/lunch and wear masks unless eating. Frankly they deserve a treat. Is this a teacher bashing thread? Is there not enough of them?

Plays that are open to 60+ parents SHOULD be cancelled yes. Our school films absolutely everything they can to keep us involved. Sure your school also utilised digital means.

user1487194234 · 10/12/2021 21:22

Not the business of parents if staff have a night out
It is legal after all

educatingrati · 10/12/2021 21:23

Are parties cancelled then?

spaceghetto · 10/12/2021 21:26

I am a teacher. Our party was cancelled. The staff at dd's school had sparkly outfits on and were telling parents at pick up about their party.

spaceghetto · 10/12/2021 21:28

@FellWanderer I don't know about others but as rates have been rising, our staff room has been closed and we are not mixing with other classes or colleagues.

@spudjulia It is not a teacher bashing thread, it is a thread about being annoyed at one school. Already lots of teachers have said theirs were cancelled.

FellWanderer · 10/12/2021 21:34

@spaceghetto My school are not back into bubbles.

I'm sorry but I just don't buy the idea of teachers in sparkly outfits at the school gates telling parents about their party plans...

Nope. I've never been to a staff night out where I got dressed up at lunchtime at work and told all the parents it was party night. Sparkly dresses at 3pm??

junebirthdaygirl · 10/12/2021 21:38

Teachers are not mixing in schools at the moment as have their own bubbles..few in staffroom at the same time etc. Were staff heading out for a meal as soon as school closed? I would be very surprised at teachers having a big night out as in my experience as a teacher we are very conscious of not only what we do but of what we are seen to do.

spaceghetto · 10/12/2021 21:48

@FellWanderer I'm sorry if I haven't included every detail. A teacher was wearing a sparkly outfit, another parent commented on it, "that's very sparkly." The teacher said "yes, we're having our work do after school." I am allowed to disagree with one school without criticising an entire workforce. This thread has already shown lots of schools have cancelled their work parties, which is responsible and considerate, in my opinion
