AIBU about swimming pool rules?

PearTree123 · 10/12/2021 20:07

Went to an Aqua Zumba class at my local leisure centre, showered as usual then walked round to the pool.
Got stopped by a staff member who refused me entry to the pool as I hadn't washed my hair in the shower and insisted I had to wash my hair for 30 seconds before being allowed in the pool.
Note: my hair was up in a bun and at no point does it go in the pool as the water only comes up to below shoulder height. Normally it stays completely dry throughout the class, as does my face. I told the staff member this but he insisted!
AIBU to be annoyed at this?! Does anyone have similar rules at their pool?

I wish but sadly not.
I rinse my hair and then put it in a swimming cap. I don't think most people wash anything, and some jump straight in the pool from the sauna alongside.
Minging.

Noone in my aqua class showers first. That being said, if the pool has that rule then it's best to follow it. How doesn't the water splash on your hair at all? In an aqua fit class normally usually jump around?

DeepaBeesKit · 10/12/2021 20:17

Can you cover it in a swimming cap? They are probably just being extra cautious.

I think it's a slightly incongruous expectation that you would go swimming and not get wet hair.

Hellocatshome · 10/12/2021 20:31

That seems a bit excessive but I do wish more people would shower before swimming in this country.

Fomofo · 10/12/2021 21:10

I think showering before going swimming is odd anyway

Kite22 · 10/12/2021 21:25

YANBU

DeepABeesKit - she isn't going swimming, she is doing an aquafit class.

I agree Fomofo

Why?? Is it better to get in unwashed? Yuck!

Cupcakegirl13 · 10/12/2021 21:35

I’m a non showerer before swimming because in reality a cursory sprinkle of half your body with plain water isn’t going to clean anything anyway

FabriqueBelgique · 10/12/2021 21:36

I don’t think it’s ideal to walk up to a customer and tell them to wash! Not sure the manager would approve of that. There should be a sign up if that’s the rules.

It reduces the amount of chlorine required.
Fomofo · 10/12/2021 21:37

Rifling - what does it wash off exactly before getting into a large body of water, what difference will it make

Fomofo · 10/12/2021 21:38

Haaveyoumet, ah I see, so the shower washes off germs that otherwise the chlorine would kill?

I had an aunt who would go swimming and her hair would not touch the water. You’d never know she’d been in the pool by her hair when we were on holiday. A skill she developed after her brothers threw her in the deep end of a pool as a child and she developed a serious phobia of submerging her head under water.
SmolCat · 10/12/2021 21:43

I feel like it washes off loose hairs etc. It does zero harm and could potentially help so I don’t understand why some people are so against it. You’re about to get wet anyway, just get over yourself and jump in the shower.

(I feel like being policed about washing your hair when it’s up and out the way is a bit odd though.)

PearTree123 · 10/12/2021 21:45

Thanks for your replies! Yes it was so embarrassing to be sent back to the shower specifically to wash my hair, which then stayed out of the water for the entire class and was only wet from the shower Hmm

OP posts:
PearTree123 · 10/12/2021 21:47

Just to clarify I had already showered my body but was then sent back as I had not showered my hair, which at no point went in the water during the class as the pool water was below shoulder height and my hair was up in a bun

ForgedInFire · 10/12/2021 21:48

I'd be so embarrassed. I always have a quick shower before I go in but I don't put my head underwater in the pool (I have a fear of it) so I dont wash my hair. Most people don't seem to shower at all before going in... did he pull anyone else up?

Fomofo · 10/12/2021 21:49

So it's to wash off loose hairs as well as germs Confused

Davros · 10/12/2021 21:50

I thought this was going to be about "no horseplay" "no heavy petting"

PearTree123 · 10/12/2021 21:52

Yes I was so embarrassed @ForgedInFire I'm the same I never put my head in the water I hate it, he didn't pull anyone else up again but I was the last to arrive then was made to do the walk of shame back to the shower Hmm

EBearhug · 10/12/2021 21:53

Showering before a swim should be more about removing any moisturiser, body lotion, etc and I suppose on hair, any mousse, gel or other products.

Fomofo · 10/12/2021 21:56

So we have three things that showering removes now: germs, hairs, lotions, - it's getting murkier by the minute Hmm

SmolCat · 10/12/2021 21:56

I don’t think it’s to wash off germs. That’s what the chlorine in the pool is for.

But yes it makes sense that it’s to wash off any particles or residues (eg lotions as pp said.)

StrawBeretMoose · 10/12/2021 21:57

I can go swimming and not get my hair wet so I'd be pretty pissed off at that and would clarify with the management.
I don't want to get my hair wet in between washes.
I do shower my body before I get in the pool.

SmolCat · 10/12/2021 22:00

Why all the faces @Fomofo? Are you really struggling to understand that running water will help give a basic rinse of our bodies? It’s probably so that pools don’t have to be overly chlorinated.
