Ascites

Posting for traffic as alcohol board is quiet. Also NC.

My AIBU is, am I wrong to want to know how long my abusive, alcoholic ex has left to live if he has ascites? We have DC together and he doesn't see them (his choice) but I know they will be upset if he dies and the DC who has has autism will be especially traumatised.

He has had fluid drained twice now. There has been mention of scarred liver and hepatitis at least 5 years ago. Still drinking.

I know there is no way for me to find out but this rollercoaster has been dragging us down for years. Anyone have a medical based view on it?

My brother lasted 4.5 years from the first diagnosis. He stopped drinking for maybe 2 years and then started again. I watched my brother die over 3 weeks and it was truly awful.

FIL lasted 2 years from when we first knew of it (but may have had it longer), he was in his 60's though and the cirrhosis was caused by diet rather than alcohol as far as I'm aware.

I'm so sorry you had to go through that

My Dh was told by doctors he had 6 months to live if he didn't stop drinking when he developed ascites and oesophageal varices. He didn't stop drinking and the doctors were proven right.

I'm very sorry to read that. Can I ask how old he was?

He was in his mid 40s. Far too young to die.

I'm truly sorry. Addiction robs people of so much.

I'm sorry to hear you are going through this.
My stepdad lasted a couple of years with ascites, the rapid downhill started once the swelling spread to his ankles and legs (edema) and he was unable to walk or wear shoes, his feet and ankles were like elephants feet. Still he wouldn't stop drinking. He died of a massive heart attack about 3 months after he developed edema.

I too kept hoping that the end would come soon as his alcoholism was traumatic for the whole family. When he died there was a sense of sadness but the most prominent feeling was a huge sense of relief that he was now unable to cause further hurt to himself and others.

My friend had it - he struggled on for a couple of years with it, before dying of a heart attack aged 40. He was such a wonderful, kind person, he'd do anything for anyone, except he just couldn't stop drinking. Sad

I miss him.
