I’m wondering if a life of not working is really all it’s cracked up to be? I think with time you can probably end up just binge watching TV shows and napping.

Studying, walking, sewing and crafting, reading, friends, family, seeing the world when safe to do so - I'm sure I'd manage!

AuntieMarys · 10/12/2021 10:15

Welcome to my world! Hiking, travelling, reading, gym, lots of coffees/ lunches/ afternoon drinks.....I don't know how I fit work in!!

Peccary · 10/12/2021 10:16

I'd do a PhD without the worry of where it would lead, just for the joy of studying.

Spend the whole summer holidays travelling round Europe by train

I'm assuming we have won the lottery or something

Peccary · 10/12/2021 10:17

In fact, I'd withdraw DD from school for a year and slow travel as a family

foreverandalways · 10/12/2021 10:19

It's an absolute lonely, scary nightmare....hours not speaking to another person during the winter months and such a looonnngggggg day...not all it's cracked up to be trust me....sadly health isn't on my side either which is an added nuisance......

DialsMavis · 10/12/2021 10:19

Exercise, volunteering, house stuff, MNing, cooking.... Would get a couple of rescue dogs immediately

RobinPenguins · 10/12/2021 10:20

More studying! I’d do more undergraduate degrees in different subjects as well as further research and study on the subject of my first BA and MA. I’m a bit of a homebird so travelling all the time doesn’t appeal to me, but learning, without any pressure of it needing to lead to a career, or needing to develop transferable skills, would be wonderful.

Obviousnamechangeduh · 10/12/2021 10:20

I'd volunteer, something to do with animals preferably, like helping out at a stable yard or dog walking. I also love to draw and paint and having more time to do this would be amazing.
I would like to travel, maybe do a degree in Art or History.
I'd also enjoy spending so much more time with my son.

People that think that not working means sitting at home all day watching TV really lack imagination.

Jacaranda75 · 10/12/2021 10:23

Oh, I'd love this! I don't have a pension or savings or own my own home, so I'll have to work until I drop. However, if I did find myself in this position, I would study for a Masters, learn to play the piano, learn Italian, go to the gym, the beauty salon, meet friends for lunch... I would love it Grin !

MedusasBadHairDay · 10/12/2021 10:25

Reading, seeing, drawing, learning new skills, studying.. I wouldn't run out off things to do.

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 10/12/2021 10:26

Waking early mornings
Meeting friends for coffee
Waking my four rescue dogs in the woods a lot
Sorting out my massive garden
Volunteering at food banks
Seeing my family more often
Studying

There are plenty of things I would fill my time with

rifling · 10/12/2021 10:28

I do/have done everything @Jacaranda75 says but I work part time! If I won the lottery I would set up a charity in my town to buy ip land and turn it into parks instead of shopping malls.

Xiaoxiong · 10/12/2021 10:29

I'd keep working, for sure, but on my own terms. My dad never has to work again but has just been headhunted and started a new job in his mid 60s, he demanded total flexibility so they spend long periods of time in lovely locations and every so often my dad takes his laptop into the study for few hours to deal with work stuff or take a call. I don't think he'll ever retire.

caketiger · 10/12/2021 10:32

Volunteering and studying.

FOJN · 10/12/2021 10:34

Grow my own fruit and vegetable and perfect preservation techniques.
Make all my own clothes. Learn to sea kayak. Walking holidays on longer routes. Do some volunteer work. Get more involved in local politics.
Do more reading and yoga.

Inextremis · 10/12/2021 10:36

This is me. I do a lot of recreational cooking (biscuits, cakes, bread etc.), walk the dogs, photography and the editing thereof, making wine, mead, bath bombs, vape juice, and perfume. Online gaming (Elder Scrolls Online), housework if necessary (not a fan). Growing vegetables come the season - right now I'm looking for seeds. When the weather gets better I'll spend some time down the beach (walking distance) doing a bit of beachcoming. I love my life - am in my 60s now, so probably won't work again - and I'm very happy to be able to say that (and know I'm lucky to be in this position).

SW1amp · 10/12/2021 10:38

DH and I managed to fluke being on gardening leave together for a few weeks between jobs
Both being paid but had no ties other than the school run

It was amazing! We went for a run or long walk together every day, had lunch a couple of times a week, went to the cinema or an exhibition during the day
Spent entire afternoons following complex recipes…

The thing that surprised us the most were how many other couples doing the same - there must be a lot of idle rich people out there!

Mabelface · 10/12/2021 10:39

I'd paint, read, probably volunteer in a charity shop. I've been off work for a few months and having the head space to just be had been amazing. Shame I'm back in Monday!

Nevertime · 10/12/2021 10:41

I'm thinking about this too. I dont think I can carry on foubg what I'm doing much longer and I could (probably) manage OK financially.

I could certainly fill the time but where's the purpose? I could sew, walk, have lunch with friends, yoga, garden, learn to play golf, all things I enjoy but I don't know if it's "enough" on full time basis iyswim. None of it matters if it doesn't get done.

I've also done quite a lot of volunteering in my life both whilst working and not working. Alongside a job it's great and rewarding, instead of a job it doesn't have the same satisfaction. You're still "helping" not actually doing.

DaphneduM · 10/12/2021 10:41

No longer working - so I:
Look after my little grandson two days a week
Enjoy time with my daughter when she's not at work
See friends for coffee, lunch
Explore the new area we moved to just before Covid
Read
Garden/grow most of my plants from seed using a cold frame
Spend time with my husband
Tinker with decorating/furnishings/some improvements for our house

zafferana · 10/12/2021 10:43

I don't work, but I do have two DC and a life of not working would be very different if I didn't have them. I very rarely put the TV on during the day, but I do spend too much time on MN and reading the news, so I guess that's not much better. Apart from that, I walk, run, do a PT degree, meet friends for coffee/lunch, shop, cook, clean, garden, volunteer, do endless school runs, organise anything/everything around the house, plan holidays, do all the organisation for birthdays and Christmas. A lot of the time I'm surprisingly busy!

AnotherOneWithNoGoodName · 10/12/2021 10:45

Studying for degrees/qualifications just for fun- in things I have a genuine interest in and just for knowledge.
Writing a book. (whether it's published or not, just for fun again!)
Learning various things- piano, languages, crafts etc.

awonderfuladventure · 10/12/2021 10:47

Cycling, travelling, volunteering, walking, swimming. Would love it!

Thatsplentyjack · 10/12/2021 10:48

Shopping, cleaning, cooking, going for lunch/coffee, going to the gym/for a run, walking the dog, doing the garden, decorating. Honestly my list is endless and I would give up working in a heartbeat. I just fucking hate working and I have a nice job.

WeAreTheWeirdosMister · 10/12/2021 10:49

I'd make jam, I could make jam kn my weekends but I don't.
