Idling cars

AIBU to ask people with engines idling to switch them off (primary culprits are workmen and parents at schools)?

It’s terribly polluting and totally unnecessary. Drives me mad and I don’t know why so many people do it (and seem miffed when you ask them to switch their engines off)?

Could they pack a spare set of dry clothes and take blankets with them?

You've never been closely aquainted with workmen have you? The absolute nonsense on this thread 🙄

@Shade17

I don't have a fancy stop-start engine but I turn my engine off even at traffic lights. I can see from my trip counter and average mile petrol counter that it makes a difference.

That’s not the best idea, you’re putting a lot more strain on battery/starter motor than they were designed for. Any fuel savings you make are likely to be wiped out by premature failure of one or the other.

Utter bollocks.

Maybe you should approach the manufacturers? You could save them a fortune by not fitting upgraded batteries and starter motors to stop/start equipped vehicles!

Very reliable car. I only do it in queues of traffic, when I know I'm going to be sitting for a while. Car is 10 years old now.

It has a problem that will be the end of it one day...but it's neither of those things. We're probably on borrowed time at the moment so I'm happy to continue in this vein.

That's daft and extreme. Hope you don't hold up the people behind you as that really would be a pain in the arse!

I've never, ever held anyone up!! I pay attention to the queue of cars in front of me, if anything I'm normally ready to go before the two or three cars in front of me!

I have been extremely well acquainted with workmen (ooer missus).

I also used to be the only female officer in my Regiment. My soldiers were always prepared in the field with dry clothes. Basic fieldcraft admin.

Dry socks stop you getting blisters. It's so easy to be comfortable in hard living conditions. Choosing not to is stupid.

Running an engine over a break or lunch time isn't going to dry clothes.

@MarshasMincePies

Very easy to take issue with it when you’re not the one working outside in the cold all day with only a van for any proper warmth I think…..

I hear the sound of a tiny violin 🎻
