Water damaged microwave safe to use?

Something got spilt under the microwave and it was put outside during dinner to clean up. Didn’t notice it had rained and when picked it up water ran from seemingly the inside workings. It’s been drying out in the garage for 5 days. Can we use it again or will I blow up the house and just bite the bullet for a new one?
YABU - buy a new one
YANBU - safe to use the watered microwave

One of the few appliances I refuse to take chances with. Time for a new one!

I wouldn't try and use it

It'll be fine. The worst that will happen is that it won't work. It's not like a pipe that can get clogged up over time. If electrical items get wet and are allowed to dry out completely they'll usually be fine.

From a safety point of view the microwaves are prevented from leaving the microwave by a Faraday cage (on 5 sides) and a Faraday mesh (on the door). Water won't have damaged this.

To be safe you could avoid touching the microwave while plugged in. Put the food in, plug the microwave in and set it off. When it's finished, unplug before removing food.

The other thing is, five days might not be enough to thoroughly dry it out at this time of year because it's so cold.

I wouldn't use an electrical appliance that was so wet inside that water ran out.

Time for a new one I would think.

Have you tried putting it in rice?

girlmom21 · 09/12/2021 15:17

Seriously though, i wouldn't use it

I replaced my microwave recently and when I moved it to go into the garage for the next tip run, what felt like loads of water ran out of it! No idea where it came from unless it was a build up of condensation. I'd been using it daily for ages until I decided to get a new one.

Thanks, I think I’ll be looking for a new one I guess
