...would you find it acceptable?

Earl grey tea, not individually wrapped, the box has been open since 2017. Best before date is May 2018.

YABU - it's fine, I would drink it
YANBU - no, that's not acceptable

YANBU!

FluffyBooBoo · 09/12/2021 03:11

I don't think I would ever know

You would probably be able to tell something wasn't right, it tastes stale as heck.

Let's say you complained it tasted odd and the waitress showed you the box.

Not acceptable at all for a cafe. At home, I'd definitely try it.

steff13 · 09/12/2021 03:31

I would expect a cafe to do a high enough volume that things wouldn't have time to go stale. If it tasted bad then I would complain.

pasturesgreen · 09/12/2021 03:35

YANBU!! I'm quite surprised that 16% voted YABU: would you genuinely be happy to be served tea with a best before date of nearly four years ago, and pay for the privilege? Confused

TheDuchessOfBeddington · 09/12/2021 03:44

Ha! I’ve got so much stuff in my cupboards from pre 2016. Just give it a good smell first! 😂😂😂

fallfallfall · 09/12/2021 04:25

I often decanter bulk purchases into other boxes (based on size/fit in the pantry).
I’d expect poor tasting tea to be ancient pipes or coffee contaminated teapot.

GovenorHeadache · 09/12/2021 04:30

Tea goes stale. I wouldn’t expect a cafe to serve me stale tea, even if safe to drink.

If they don’t have high enough turnover for a new box every 3-4 months then they need to take it off the menu.

Yes, exactly this.
SimpsonsXmasBoogie · 09/12/2021 06:11

At home, I wouldn't give a toss, and would just dump it if it tasted funny.

In a cafe I would be pissed off and expect a refund.

NewPapaGuinea · 09/12/2021 06:14

Depends. If it tasted shite then of course it’s unacceptable.

CloudyStorms · 09/12/2021 06:16

I'd expect somewhere that served food to be on top of their dates. It may be only tea but are they that lax with their chicken?

SmartCar · 09/12/2021 06:18

Pretty sure it's not allowed to sell stuff out of date in a eatery. Not 100% though. I wouldn't be happy

toomuchfaster · 09/12/2021 06:18

My concern is if they are not doing adequate date checking, then what else is not adequate and I would seriously consider report to environmental health.

toomuchfaster · 09/12/2021 06:19

@CloudyStorms beat me to it!
