To be thinking of getting a puppy this close to Christmas?

Long story short, a few months ago we suffered a tragedy with our much wanted and loved puppy.

The dc, husband and I have been miserable ever since. I swore we wouldn’t get another dog because I was completely heartbroken. I couldn’t face losing another one again, and I didn’t think we’d ever be lucky enough to find another one as smart/loving as her.

My sisters friend lives on a farm and often takes in strays/unwanted pets from their village. She had recently taken in a small female mongrel who they then found out was pregnant.

Dsis mentioned the pups a while ago when they were born but I explained we were too heartbroken to think about it. Dh and dc have kept showing me pictures of random puppies but I haven’t felt anything apart from ‘aw cute’.

She sent me a picture today of the one female puppy who hasn’t got a home yet (the others have been given away to people they know well). And has said that all the friend is asking for is that they can do a home visit tomorrow morning, then we would be free to go and visit her and her mum at the farm and pick her up.

I haven’t said anything to dh and dc yet, but I have to admit, I’ve completely fallen for her. I have an intense desire to go get her and am strangely excited about doing the the sleepless nights/training/puppy classes all over again.

Am I BU or insane to even think about this?

@Didiusfalco

This is completely different to the typical ‘puppy for Christmas’ scenario. This little one needs a home and you need a puppy. It’s actually quite lovely.
The pup could currently have a manger for a bed and OP is taking it in.

Lovely thread you are established dog owners ready for a loving home for a new pup enjoy her and bring her home🤗🤗

Alisae · 08/12/2021 20:53

The lady sounds wonderful, really knowledgable and she is coming tomorrow morning to have a look around and a chat.

DH and dc were very surprised when I told them and are over the moon Smile. It’s very busy at the moment with everyone double checking the puppy proofing!

If all goes well with our home visit then we will be following her back to the farm to visit and possibly pick new dpup up.

Awww. I clicked on this thread to give you a bollocking, but like everyone else I think it sounds like it might all work out really well. How old is the pup? Do you have a crate?

CaptainCabinets · 08/12/2021 22:09

Awwww, she was meant to be yours 🥺

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 08/12/2021 22:13

Good luck! It sounds like you're all ready for a new household member just in time for this little one.

TheMuggleStruggle · 09/12/2021 00:12

Awww. How lovely

Hairyfriend · 09/12/2021 00:20

Sorry for your previous loss Flowers. I've very quickly realised that there is no ideal time for a pup! Our renovation has been delayed so currently living in a caravan in the garden. Not ideal at all- tiny caravan and the 'garden' is rubble and mud. We are making it work though.
I'm sure the pup will be grateful for such a loving home as yours.

Shamelessly posting just to look at your new puppy Smile

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/12/2021 18:22

So cute!!!

FallonCarringtonWannabe · 09/12/2021 18:22

We got our 6 month old pup a few years ago a couple of weeks before christmas. He spent the first week being dropped off at his human grand parents when we went to work, then we were all off for two weeks. We had the time to settle him in properly. He didnt even know how to walk on a lead! If we hadnt got him at christmas, we wouldnt have had the time to focus on him. He wasnt a christmas gift for anyone.

FallonCarringtonWannabe · 09/12/2021 18:23

Aww how cute!

ThinWomansBrain · 09/12/2021 18:23

when I worked for a national animal rescue charity, we didn't rehome in Decemner - but that was to avoid the pet as a present, etc.
In the circumstances you've described, sound perfect.
(as long as you post a photo when she arrives home).

ThinWomansBrain · 09/12/2021 18:25

got distracted while writing - the photo wasn't there when I started writing! she is adorable.
