To think it could be 'The Pill'

Sorry, posting here for traffic!

I used to have the pill but had to have it removed due to ongoing gynae issues. Was given the mini pill and ended up with boil/cyst lumps under my chin, really sore and never go.

Spoke to GP and asked for a pill that is better for my skin (as I've previously been prone to hormonal acne) and she prescribed Levest- which seems to be the same active ingreds as microgynon. I've only been on it 9 days but I've progressed to facial spots instead. I also feel depressed.realy depressed. I'm not sleeping, anxious and want to cry. Also feel like I don't love my partner any more! Any chance it's related to the pill? Anyone have any experience?

It could definitely be the pill. I had similar reactions years ago and have vowed never to use hormonal contraception ever again.

FoxgloveSummers · 08/12/2021 18:31

My sister and I both took microgynon at different times and it made us both instantly depressed, angry and upset. I was particularly surprised/knew it wasn’t psychosomatic as I had taken another pill before with no ill effects. The stuff went straight back in the box and I demanded a better pill. Doctors like to pretend that this is unheard of but I think it’s actually really common!

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 08/12/2021 18:31

I had similar reactions, I also bled for nine months straight. Had so many tests and was told it won't be the pill, a week or two after I came off I stopped bleeding and periods were back to normal.

I've tried the pill, mini pills, different brands of them and had an issue with every single one.

CaMePlaitPas · 08/12/2021 18:31

This is the reason I don't use hormonal contraception. I've had awful reactions to it, and it triggers my depression to the brink of being suicidal. Awful.

HangOnToYourself · 08/12/2021 18:34

Microgynon was horrible for me made me spotty and eat like a horse. I've failed much better with femodene

SlamLikeAGuitar · 08/12/2021 18:36

Yes it definitely could be.
Microgynon sent me into the worst depressive state I have ever felt, and my skin completely erupted on it.
I’ve been hormonal contraception free for 5-ish years now, and am really reluctant to try anything again because of the potential side effects Sad

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/12/2021 18:37

I had the implant which is the same hormone and ended up with cystic acne that needed roaccutane to go.

If you’ve got acne prone skin progesterone is just the worst.

Notonthenewrug · 08/12/2021 18:48

Thank you so much for the repliesm I feel less alone. I'm literally sat here in tears. I feel so anxious and depressed and it's pretty much come out of nowhere. I also have nausea too but also had this on my last contraceptive pill.

I was like this, including on mirena coil. I ended up with a series of copper coils which were brilliant and side-effect-free

DeepaBeesKit · 08/12/2021 18:53

I haven't used hormonal contraception for years due to the many crap emotional & physical side effects.

IARTNS · 08/12/2021 18:56

Microgynon is evil

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/12/2021 19:00

Would be open to trying the copper coil? It’s non-hormonal.

All the long acting reversible contraceptions are progesterone afaik.

The dr needs to start you on acne treatment, I waited for it to go away and tried exclusions diets and skin care instead which is why I’ve still got a red scar on my cheek.

FoxgloveSummers · 08/12/2021 19:05

Haha it is evil! I have had to explain the same to friends. I honestly think they need to bin it or explain the side effects and take them seriously when women report them. It’s the cheapest pill apparently which is why the NHS will offer it to you first.

Notonthenewrug · 08/12/2021 19:24

@Fluffycloudland77 I had the copper coil but had to have it removed due to ongoing chronic pelvic pain. I'm still waiting to be seen by gynae. I literally hate hormonal contraception.

They only prescribe microgynon so frequently because it's one of the cheapest (if not the cheapest).

I'm going to email the surgery tomorrow, request a different pill and something to clear up the lumps on my face/neck!

Vinorosso74 · 08/12/2021 19:32

It's a number of years since I was on the pill but I didn't get in with Microgynon either. My skin was awful, greasy and spotty. Made me have terrible mood swings too.
GP at the time made me switch to it from Brevinor which I'd been on for years with no issue. I did switch to one with similar ingredients to Brevinor but I forget the name.

Babyvenusplant · 08/12/2021 19:35

The best one I've ever been on is Yasmin, I had to get it online through a pharmacy though as my gp didn't prescribe it

theworldsgonefeckingmad · 08/12/2021 19:42

I am the same with any hormonal contraceptives @Notonthenewrug Sad can you try the copper coil? That was the only thing that worked for me and I tried various pills/implant etc and all I was either depressed or very angry, hope you get sorted Thanks

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/12/2021 20:14

You can get free condoms at the drs or family planning if you decide to come off it. Their expensive otherwise.

Notonthenewrug · 08/12/2021 20:23

That's all for the advice. I was in Dianette years ago, great for my skin and no issues but they don't commonly prescribe it anymore. I will ask about Yasmin, I did have it years ago but can't remember if I had side effects.
I much prefer the coil and had it years. However when I had it refitted after my DS was born, I had huge issues with pelvic pain. I still dont know if it's down to the coil or c section complications and who knows when I'll see gynae!
I suppose the other issue is that you need to stick with a pill for a month or 2 so it can settle into your system.
I've tried persuading my partner to get a vasectomy but he's not keen.

I haven't used condoms in about 15 years and they do have a tendancy to slip off inside me and I ended up taking the morning after pill a few times as a result!

OP posts:
Notonthenewrug · 08/12/2021 20:24

On Dianette, not in it!

I feel somewhere between really depressed and emotionally dead. I've decided I'm ready to leave my partner because I don't love him or care!

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 08/12/2021 20:26

Typical man. You’re sitting their with pain and spots & they refuse to get a vasectomy.

Their not team players are they.

Dianette was great, loved that pill.

CombatBarbie · 08/12/2021 20:38

I made my DH get a vasectomy because I was fed up of sore acne boils and several contraceptive changes (was fine on depo but was refused after being on it after 10yrs due to bone risks). Any reason DP can't step us and use a condom?

Notonthenewrug · 08/12/2021 20:38

@Fluffycloudland77 I know! Drives me crazy. He's almost 20 years older than me and we don't want more children. When I questioned him, he said he doesn't want his legs in stirrups! I'm constantly poked and prodded down below. My coil.strings were missing, so I had a horrible retrieval and almost died having our son but he's worried about opening his legs!

I'll try one more pill then I'm on strike!

Good for you. My relative didn’t get his till an unexpected pregnancy. He got it organised pretty quickly after that I can tell you.

Men are such babies.
