To ask if anyone who has had Covid and been vaccinated has it again?

Just that, really. I know a number of people who've been double vaccinated who have subsequently got Covid, including one who was in IC in hospital. I know a lot more people who have had Covid who were not vaccinated. I know two people who have had Covid multiple times (twice in one case, three times in the other; both under 30 and pre-vaccination). So far I don't know anyone who had Covid, then got double vaccinated, and then went on to have a second symptomatic infection. Clearly these people exist. I just read a study on PubMed about various HCPs in this exact situation. But among those with less frequent exposure, I'm not sure how likely it is? Anecdotal evidence would be very welcome!

Had covid in 2020. Double vaxxed earlier this year. Currently have Omicron (informed by test and trace)

hopsalong · 07/12/2021 22:29

Thanks @Pinkflipflop85. Do you feel ill? How does it compare to the first bout?

My mum had Covid in March 2020 (symptomatic), October 2020 (asymptomatic), then got her jab June 2021 (one dose in the country she lives in is considered fully vaccinated if you’ve recently recovered, so she couldn’t access a second dose). Got Covid again - symptomatically - in October 2021.

So she was ‘fully’ vaccinated according to the EU, but not double. Not sure if this helps?

BHX3000 · 07/12/2021 22:30

Btw all those infections were confirmed by PCRs.

Shiningpath · 07/12/2021 22:30

Same here. On my second go now despite double vaccination.

Pinkflipflop85 · 07/12/2021 22:31

First time round I just lost all taste and smell. Miserable, but I wasn't ill at all.

This time it floored me for the first 4 days. The pain from coughing was unbearable. Hopefully coming out the other side of it now.

hopsalong · 07/12/2021 22:44

Hope you feel much better soon @Pinkflipflop85. I think I currently have it again (v weakly positive LFT) and will do a PCR test tomorrow. So far no symptoms. When I had it the first time in March 2020 (only confirmed by subsequent antibody test) I felt pretty rough but never close to being seriously ill. Was hoping I might ride it out asymptomatically this time, but looks as if that might be wishful thinking!

Yes - several staff members at the school I work had Covid early last year, have had two vaccines, at least three are currently off with a second infection.

DeepaBeesKit · 08/12/2021 02:26

I've currently got it after being double vac & its indistinguishable from the sort of heavy cold/bad chest I often get in November/december. I assume that's kind of where we are headed - the jabs help us get over the part where it's new and our immune systems dont know what to do. Then longer term routine exposure means that (like other coughs/colds/flu) all but the most elderly or immunocompromised should simply expect to get it mildly every once in a while.

OompaLumpaLabrador · 08/12/2021 06:31

Yes, like Deepa, I had it in 2020 and again last months ( actually triple vaccinated but only just). I had symptoms like a normal winter cold. Felt so, so much less unwell than first time around ( or after jabs 1 and 3). Vaccine did its job as far as I’m concerned.

Dozer · 08/12/2021 06:37

Think I had covid in Feb 20, but unsure as was no testing at that stage, lost much sense of smell for many months. Double vaxxed and a couple of months ago had covid (PCR), v mild symptoms but have again lost smell.

MissBPotter · 08/12/2021 06:43

My BIL got it in feb 2020, then got double jabbed and had it again in aug 2021. He has a very unhealthy lifestyle and is 50 and obese so I think he could have been very seriously ill the second time if he hadn’t been jabbed. As it was he felt terrible but didn’t need to go to hospital and is fine now luckily.

yogafairy · 08/12/2021 07:08

We (husband and I) first had covid jan/feb 2020. Both ill for 3 weeks, no intervention needed.

Both double vaccinated by June 2021 now DH, dd (9) and I all currently have covid. This time is honestly so much more intense. Same symptoms, just so severe. My gp has called me every day to monitor what's going on with a view to hospital admission but just this morning I feel like I'm turning the corner.

Sorry if that makes no sense. My thoughts are so jumbled still.

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 08/12/2021 07:13

Vaccines are waning so lots of people may catch it again.

LaMariposa · 08/12/2021 07:13

Covid twice (Mar/Oct 2020) and double jabbed this year.
I work in a lot of schools and have been in close contact with many people who tested positive, nothing yet.
I wonder/hope that a constant low level exposure to the virus might mean I don’t get it properly again.
I still do LFTs and after being a close contact of a Covid case from the weekend I feel rough today, still negative on the tests though.

My neighbour in his 80's had his booster and was admitted to hospital for a non covid illness.

He was then found to have covid and was admitted to a covid ward at another hospital. He was asymptomatic. He was telling anyone who would listen that he didn't have covid and they had moved him because they wanted to free up a bed.
