My washing machine has decided it's Chinese

Goodnesses knows how, but the language settings on my washing machine have changed to Chinese (at least I think it's Chinese).

No problem, I think.

I get out the instruction booklet (carefully filed for such an emergency), look up language settings and bring up the list of language options.

One major fucking flaw....

All the languages are listed in Chinese so I've no bloody clue what to select.

I've just spent 15 minutes messing about randomly selecting options, trying (and failing) to find any language that uses characters I have a remote chance of deciphering.

AIBU give up for half and hour and have a Gin to calm myself before returning to swear at the bloody thing and trying again?

@BreadInCaptivity seriously though I can help if you post a pic :)

I am victorious.....

I stumbled on Italian and from there was able to navigate to English.

Do I deserve another gin?

Ah thank you but I'm sorted now.

I do appreciate the offer though.

Much more button pressing with the annoying associated beeping was making me very sweary Grin.

Well done for sorting it, but you could have left it and taken it as an opportunity to learn Mandarin. You never know when you would benefit from being able write extra rinse in Mandarin!

😂 true...but I think I'll take a gins as my reward for tonight.

The air in the utility room is blue 😂.

I've not sworn so much since my oven stupid bloody Aga that I have since got rid of broke on Christmas Day!

Yes I know we are supposed to love an Aga on here but I bloody hated the one installed when we moved in. Hot, expensive to run and maintain and I don't miss it one little bit.

Yes it's the beeping that always finishes us off.

DH calls me a luddite but I never have this trouble with my hot tub and mangle! :)

Yesthatscorrect · 07/12/2021 22:29

Sympathies. My dishwasher turned Russian. I can more or less understand it now. If there's anything I really need to know then I have a friend who I send photos to and she translates. I wouldn't want it back to English now.

Yesthatscorrect · 07/12/2021 22:30

My dishwasher talks about something called Monika a lot. I assume that means quick wash in Russian.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/12/2021 22:31

My washing machine is German. I doba lot of guesswork. And know some random German words...

I'll be honest, if it had self identified as German/French/Spanish then there is a good chance I might have been tempted to leave it to it's own devices on the basis I could probably form some rudimentary conversations with it.

However, trying to read mandarin (if that's what it was) would mean many of the more complex programs I bought the bloody thing for would have been inaccessible.

My children turned my car’s A/V system into Arabic leaving us all Confused - luckily we lived in central London at the time so I was able to find someone who spoke the language fairly quickly!

Tuliptulip · 07/12/2021 22:40

Might be more challenging now we’re in rural Dorset!

BreadInCaptivity · 07/12/2021 22:40

I wonder how many people are living with household devices in languages they cannot fathom?

I'm loving the Russian dishwasher Smile

German is definitely easier than Mandarin. Plus, I can't blame an appliance for speaking its native language since we bought it there.

It could have been worse, we moved from a Greek speaking country to a German speaking one!

DuckWithOneWing · 07/12/2021 22:43

My car speaks Italian. At least I think she does, because she's a fiat, but I can't understand what she's telling me.

That true - I'd have been far less cross if had started speaking German. Then it might simply have been that it was bored speaking to me in its second language.
