To be so worried about when sick pay runs out?

I’ve been off work for 4 weeks now due to long Covid symptoms - complete exhaustion, severe back pain and nerve pains in hands and feet.
I am really worried about losing my job as a teaching assistant ( state school ) and can’t bring myself to ask when my sick pay runs out as every week that’s passed I’ve just hoped I would feel well enough to return.
Waiting on blood test results to determine whether an MRI is needed - hoping someone else has been through similar and can give me some hope!

Are you getting full pay as sick pay or SSP?
I assume it lasts longer than 4 weeks

WorriedWilma123 · 07/12/2021 14:20

Full pay currently. I really can’t afford to go onto SSP

I’m worried I’ll lose my job altogether if these long Covid symptoms don’t pass

Are you a UNISON member? They should be able to help you. Otherwise you need to find out how long you get full time sick pay for. It may be dependent on how long you have worked there.

I get full sick pay for 6 months then half pay for 6 months, so it may not be as bad as you think.

I hope you feel better soon.

They can’t sack you for being poorly. I work in a school and we had a TA go off with covid a week into September and she only came back 2 weeks ago. I don’t know what pay she was on but there was no question about her being sacked. She’s come back on reduced hours as that’s what was suggested to help her and will be going back to her full hours next week. Sorry I can’t be much help but hopefully a little reassuring. Can you ask your head or the schools office manager/business manager about the pay situation?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/12/2021 14:26

I thought you got 6 months full pay?

If you have a persistent or long term illness that leaves you unable to do your job then yes, if an alternative role cannot be found, you can be dismissed. It will be much much, further down the road though. OP have you been communicating with your workplace? What do they say? Have they invited you to any meetings yet?

Check your contract

ButterflyBitch,
How is she doing now if you don’t mind me asking?
I just want this all to be over.
I’m 8 weeks into having Covid and apart from one week where I felt okay and returned to work as normal I’ve been terrible.
That’s really reassuring as I’ve heard hardly nothing from my boss so I just don’t know what he’s thinking.

I am so I will contact them, I’ve just been to afraid to ring HR as they’re based in my school and it almost looks like I’m trying to tally coming back with when the pay stops but that’s really not it at all - I want to be back at work and feeling normal as soon as possible
