To not remind Octopus that I owe them a grand ??

... or do they know this already ? Moved in to new place October 2020, a doer upper, so very draughty during winter months so had to keep the heating on high to ensure small kids were kept warm. Moved out of the house in Feb for 6 months whilst builders were in renovating. Forgot about electricity bill during this time as lots going on with temporary accommodation and building site on top of work, kids etc. AVRO then went bust and my account was moved over to Octopus. Looking at my Octopus account now, it states that I owe then £ 250 for September 2021 until now. The grand I owe Avro is listed in historical bills but not in the main account as what I owe them, which Ive now paid in full so account at £0 at the moment. Do I now just wait and hope they have forgotten the historical bill or will they get in touch ?

Put the cash aside in a savings account (and earn some interest!) and wait for them to contact you. Their accounting issues aren't your problem.

I’d imagine you have estimated reads so your balance isn’t correct and when you give an updated read it’ll catch up.

Energy companies can only back bill 12 months though

We were with Green Network Energy when they went bust in February. It took until August before the debit balance was moved over to the new provider.

MorningStarling · 07/12/2021 14:47

If your account says you have paid in full/balance is zero then don't worry about the old bill. Keep the money aside in case they ask for it but it's fine to keep quiet until they do, and the chances are they will. It won't affect your credit score because you can show that they've told you there is no balance to pay. You can't pay Avro now, and you don't need to pay the Octopus until they ask for it themselves.

They have six years to ask for it but they can't charge interest or take any legal action until they've asked for it and you've failed to respond.

That applies to unbilled energy. The OP has been billed by Avro so the 12 month rule doesn't apply here. The limit for them to chase a bill already issued is 6 years.

askingforafriend80 · 07/12/2021 15:09

@MorningStarling depends if op is having estimated bills or not
If they are estimated this still applies

AlfonsoTheUnrepentant · 07/12/2021 15:10

I would contact Octopus to address the issue.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 07/12/2021 15:14

We had this from when NPower had issues around billing. Dh kept asking for an actual bill and they didn't produce one within the 12 months and the bill was written off. Also, and this is a bit outing! They then kept chasing and he suggested he was going to charge them £100 if they contacted him again for his time in dealing with it, they did. And he billed them. And they paid up! Was fun times.

But different if you have an actual proper bill.

mankywits · 07/12/2021 15:24

Had an email from Octopus today, part of which said:

Also, we are still waiting to receive your final bill from Avro...

LittleGwyneth · 07/12/2021 15:28

I'd keep the cash aside but leave it in my account rather than theirs. I'm a freelancer and I'd certainly never expect anyone to remind me they owed me money.

DraigFach · 07/12/2021 16:03

Octopus will have agreed with the government/Ofgem to take on your debt as part of the SoLR process. I'd be incredibly surprised if they waived a sum over £100 as part of that process...frankly given the battering that all energy suppliers are having I'd be surprised if any debt was written off.

Be ready to pay or have a plan to pay the debt.

KeepYaHeadUp · 07/12/2021 17:13

But be prepared for them to have added interest and charges if it's been referred to debt collectors. I'd only g down this route if you can 100% guarantee they haven't communicated with you (could you have missed letters if you've been away?)

If you look at the octopus information for Avro customers you’ll see that they are still in the process of transferring the accounts across so most if not all of us haven’t been billed for months. The advice I saw was to keep the avro direct debit going or set a new one up with Octopus to avoid getting a huge bill once it’s all resolved. I’d put the money aside, it looks like these are going out fairly soon. Here’s the latest update

UPDATE THURSDAY 2ND DECEMBER

We've been busy cracking on with final bills for Avro customers. They're now well underway, and we're on track to get the vast majority sent out over the next few weeks, though it's still a slow process as we have to be meticulous about reviewing Avro's data to make sure every bill's right.

We're also really hopeful for progress on transferring Avro Direct Debits over to Octopus Energy within the next few weeks (sooner rather than later).

Please note: in the interim while we wait to bring your original Avro DD over, your Octopus online account might say you have 'No active Direct Debit'. That doesn't mean you need to set up a new Direct Debit with us. As long as you haven't cancelled your Direct Debit with Avro, your payments will come out of your bank account as normal, and will be transferred over to your Octopus account balance soon.

If you'd prefer to start your Direct Debit fresh, you can cancel your old Avro Direct Debit and set up a new one on your Octopus online account (where you'll be able to see and manage it straight away).

I have the same issue - I have called the new company and told them I owe Avro and they said just wait and it will eventually get sorted.

LemonSwan · 07/12/2021 18:48

and can I say Avro are so bloody disorganised I would be surprised if they ever bill!
