Annoyed at receiving post for someone that does not live in my home

I'm in the process of selling my home, a buyer has been allocated but the sale hasn't gone through yet. We haven't even got a completion date and are only at draft contracts stage. AIBU to be annoyed that I keep receiving post for the buyer... at my home? I'm still the home owner and it's really rubbing me the wrong way as we haven't even exchanged contracts or so much as had a date agreed for completion. In my eyes they don't own the property yet and shouldn't be having post delivered here. Is it fair to be annoyed or AIBU?

I would return to sender. I cant imagine being cheeky enough to do this deliberately but it could be a mistake.

montysma1 · 07/12/2021 10:24

In the greater scheme
me of things... meh. Who cares.

AngelonTopoftheTree · 07/12/2021 10:25

That seems odd, why are they giving your address as theirs when they don't live there? I'd either return to sender or bin it, depending on who it's from.

viques · 07/12/2021 10:26

Just put the post in a drawer , they can find it if and when they move in. Hope it’s nothing important.......

gannett · 07/12/2021 10:26

We are buying a house and it sounds like we're at the same stage as you though we're hoping to complete at the start of January. The sellers are lovely - they've said we can start redirecting post if we need to (for example, packages from overseas that might take a month or more to get here). Of course we asked first though.

And if it's important? Why would you deliberately be so adversarial?

Put it in a drawer and leave it for them FGS. Requires no effort on your part.

Inquisitivearchitect · 07/12/2021 10:31

When this happened to me I took comfort in knowing at least they weren’t planning to pull out last minute! (After having issues with 2 flakey previous buyers near exchange!)

Just pop it in the drawer and be grateful that the sale / purchase looks to be actually happening Smile

AngelonTopoftheTree · 07/12/2021 10:40

@gannett I'm not being adversarialConfused
I said depending on who it's from - anything important or with a return address gets return to sender, a circular/ flyer from local takeaway get binned. What's wrong with that?

hilsea · 07/12/2021 10:46

As others have said I would take it as a vote of confidence that they wont pull out! It sounds like they are being super organised with things like the utilities and telephone line etc so that they can start straight away when they move. Surely in the scheme of things it doesnt matter: just put in a pile and leave for when they take up residency.

Yes, this.

They sound like committed buyers so I'd be pleased tbh.

bert3400 · 07/12/2021 10:58

It really isn't a big deal in the scheme of things. I know when we sold we were getting post for the buyers. I just put it to one side, no big deal Confused

Mindymomo · 07/12/2021 10:59

They’ve probably done a lot of utility/insurance comparison quotes and these companies are following up with quotes in post. It wouldn’t bother me, but probably can be upsetting when you’ve not actually moved yet.

I asked the woman i bought my home off I I could do this and she was okay with it. I think it's just people trying to be organised but it's good manners to ask. I would be annoyed if they just done it to be honest but would also just stick it in a cupboard, you don't need to do anything with it

If they haven't bought the house yet it's not going to be a generic takeaway flyer addressed to them, is it. It's going to be something they've made a conscious decision to be sent to what will hopefully soon be their new address. Even RTS is a bit passive-aggressive. Just keep it for them! If it all falls through you can send it all back at that point.

Pixiedust138 · 07/12/2021 11:13

This really seems like it could go either way! I think for me it's just that the sale isn't likely to be completed for another 1-2 months. If it was later in the process I'm sure I'd feel differently.

Bit premature of them but I agree with the poster who pointed out that at least they're not planning on pulling out at the last minute.

PinkAndPurpleClouds · 07/12/2021 11:19

Bit odd, and a bit previous! YANBU. As a pp said though, just pop it in a drawer for them.

TenoringBehind · 07/12/2021 11:22

I’d take it as a good sign that they’re serious about buying.

OldSoho · 07/12/2021 11:25

They're not hoping you'll pass it back to them so they can use it as proof for school applications, are they? Just another thought...

Just came to say the same.
MorningStarling · 07/12/2021 12:22

Return to sender marked "not at this address" - that way if they are pulling the school scam hopefully the sender will realise what's going on. Whatever you do, don't hand over the letters, at least not until you complete.

I would care. Most people would care.
MalbecandToast · 07/12/2021 13:27

Their mortgage provider will insist that they have buildings insurance in place prior to exchange and completion- they take this out and then the policy documents get sent to them at the new address. Its nothing more sinister than that Smile

SheWoreYellow · 07/12/2021 13:30

It’s barely a school scam at all if they will be moving in there though. Seems very petty to do anything about it.

I’d think it was slightly cheeky but be reassured by their keenness.
