Went to town yesterday with a good.mind to spend too much money on friffily bits like fancy baubles, candles and (sod it) some Christmassy cushions for my front room.

There were a few bits and pieces but mostly just empty shelves or shelves where things had been spread out to make it look fuller. Tried to find a sparkly party dress for my daughter and there was just nothing there, really.

Has it all been bought already? Or has it just not arrived? Was a bit disappointed - don't buy much tat usually but got myself all psyched up!

Have you not followed the news for the last two years? Supply issues not ring any bells?

RobinPenguins · 07/12/2021 09:31

My MIL has bought it all

Lorriestakingppe · 07/12/2021 09:32

Sorry that was a bit spiky, there are massive supply issues everywhere OP

mamaoffourdc · 07/12/2021 09:35

@RobinPenguins

My MIL has bought it all
😂😂😂😂
Legoisthebest · 07/12/2021 09:36

Yeah it's been and gone.
Even before the chaos of covid and brexit many retailers have cut back on the amount of seasonal products they sell. Christmas stock - they want it in around October and gone by December. They don't want piles and piles left over which has to be sold off cheap.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 07/12/2021 09:39

A lot of my friends have noticed similar

Not tat per se but not as much choice in the shops

Thesearmsofmine · 07/12/2021 09:43

Most people will already have been and bought those bits and the shops won’t want get more in because otherwise they risk being left with in come January.

Ciaram55 · 07/12/2021 09:43

Home bargains has loads of stuff.

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 07/12/2021 09:47

One Below seems to have the most sparkly stuff this year.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 07/12/2021 09:48

I think it all disappeared 2-3 weeks ago! I’ve noticed that too!

canichange · 07/12/2021 10:14

I went into Waitrose on Saturday to buy some nice Christmas candles and card. Bugger all in there! No candles and just the leftovers of cards. I suppose people might be cards earlier to allow time to write and post them, but it was only the 4th!

I've noticed in the past that if you go into a shop on the twenty-anything of Christmas that it's all gone and cleared away. I refuse to go anywhere other than the supermarket by that point because it makes me feel so un-Christmassy. Think my cutoff will have to be earlier!

MintyGreenDream · 07/12/2021 10:24

Try Matalan.I went I today and there were shelves bulging with everything xmassy.

LindaEllen · 07/12/2021 10:42

I think everyone has made an effort to get organised sooner this year a) because they're determined to have a really good one after last year, and b) in case there are restrictions or they need to isolate, meaning they can't get things later.

CanofCant · 07/12/2021 11:16

It might depend on where you live, I've not noticed a reduction in the part of NE where I am.

Thecurliestwurly · 07/12/2021 11:21

I have been in Asda, card shops and Pound Stores in the last week and they are fine. I haven't really been looking to buy more tat this year as I have spent enough in previous years and want to pare it down (also have a dig and child that would eat most of it given the chance).

Not sure about more upmarket stores though. What sort of tat are you after?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 07/12/2021 11:22

It is all here on the fringes of East London. Decorations, sparkly dresses, Christmas cushions, throws, doormats, mugs and toilet paper. All of it.

buckleten · 07/12/2021 11:24

M&S has Christmas cushions, candles and lots of decorations, and sparkly kids' clothes..

Beowulfa · 07/12/2021 11:24

Always a Christmas tat table/corner in charity shops this time of year.

LadyCatStark · 07/12/2021 11:37

Our local shop has had mini eggs and creme eggs in for weeks now, so yeah I guess you missed the boat, it’s Easter now 🙈. But I have noticed a lot less Christmas bits in shops this year. I needed to make a new Christmas sensory box for work as I can’t find mine but I could hardly find anything suitable.

MargotMoon · 07/12/2021 13:54

@Ciaram55

Home bargains has loads of stuff.

Yup, stacks of tat in my local Home Bargains as well

Yes - this caught me out at Easter this year. It definitely used to be A Thing that you could buy cheap easter eggs the day after easter/cheap christmas stuff on the 27th/etc, but now retailers seem to want to make sure it's all gone in advance so they don't have to discount it afterwards. Which makes lots of sense from their point of view, but is a bit rubbish if you're a person who gets some joy from buying Christmas stuff actually at Christmas - I don't want to buy everything for Christmas in November!
Giggorata · 07/12/2021 14:33

Our local Home Bargains has full shelves of Xmas stuff, too. There's also an independent place and a garden centre with a ton of stuff, for a price.

User156 · 07/12/2021 14:37

I think there’s a lot less on the shelves this year. Was in the Christmas department of my local John Lewis at the weekend and it was looking very threadbare. I expect it’s a combination of brexit / HGV driver shortages / pandemic.

Chikapu · 07/12/2021 14:37

If you don't buy your Christmas tat in August you don't stand a chance of getting any!

inferiorCatSlave · 07/12/2021 14:45

Has it all been bought already?

Radio 4 was telling me this morning we've all hit the shops early this year - all the talk of shortages in the press.

We seem to be opposite - less food in than usual - no wrapping paper less organised with presents.

We got a message from secondary school - after years of not doing christmas jumpers they are again Hmm- we'd seen a rack in local charity shop earlier in the month so went to look this weekend - nothing there - presumably all sold.
