I have the morning after pill in my hand but don’t know what to do!

Posting for traffic! Feeling so sick with anxiousness. DH and I had unprotected sex on Saturday night. Was probably ovulating or about to ovulate. We have 3dc with the youngest being 4months old. We thought we were happy to try for dc4 but now I’m freaking out that we are making a stupid decision. I ordered the morning after pill (EllaOne) and I’ve got it in my hand right now and I’ve no idea if I should take it or not. I’m in turmoil! Anyone ever taking it and still conceived? Was everything okay with your pregnancy and baby? Now worried that maybe I’ve already conceived and harm baby. Worried it won’t work. Worried that if I don’t take it and am in fact pregnant that we won’t be able to cope! Please someone help ease my mind. I know nobody can make the decision for me but just some sort of past experience in this situation would really help. Also, I know we have been totally irresponsible not being careful - I’m already giving myself enough of a hard time over that without anybody else chipping in. Thank you x

Some weird statements being thrown around here. The MAP does not "not work" after ovulation. The body is naturally infertile in the 2 weeks after ovulation. If you miss the fertile window then the cervix closes and you cannot get pregnant.

The MAP is simply a massively high dose of progesterone and tricks your body into thinking it's in the second half of your cycle. Once the progesterone levels drop, it induces a period which flushes out the uterus. If taken after ovulation, the progesterone will still act in line with the progesterone in your body during the luteal phase and most likely induce a heavy period.

So regardless of when you take it, it will work in the sense it forces you to have a period. It's recommended to be taken max. 3 days after intercourse because that's before implantation can happen so there is no chance the implanted embryo will be producing hormones that may affect the outcome.

I'm sure there are failures as well. One situation might be if the body is already producing so much progesterone that no period happens in which case the embryo stays safe.

I wouldn't take it while you feel undecided like this. There are options if you decide not to have the baby. I would take my time, think it over. If you decide you don't want it you can arrange a termination, there's plenty of time.

You have a 4 months old and rest close together. In your position I'd take the pill even just to give your body a chance to recover from previous pregnancies

I took it 9 years ago and it didn't work (thank goodness) as I now have an amazing DS.

@User13490358923 thank you, this is really informative.

MAP has a fairly high failure rate because as others have said it prevents ovulation but not (or not reliably) fertilisation/implantation if you have already ovulated which it sounds like you probably have. I reckon you were ovulating at the weekend and that's why a baby seemed like a good idea! If you take it now it could still go either way but you could always try again in a month or two as others have said.

Ducksareruiningmypatio · 07/12/2021 12:36

Mine failed, I'd already ovulated
I wish they'd be clear about that when they have the little consultation!

Chocoholic26 · 07/12/2021 12:43

So I’ve taken it! Now for a few weeks of waiting, hoping I don’t regret it and probably spending far too much on pregnancy tests.

I'd go ahead and take it. Have a baby when you plan to have a baby.

I think it's perfectly clear that people mean 'I took the MAP and pregnancy still happened...'

You had sex on Saturday night? It's Tuesday afternoon. I think that ship has sailed.

Today is the last day. They work up to 72 hours
Chocoholic26 · 07/12/2021 14:13

@OnlyAFleshWound so I took EllaOne? It is supposed to have a higher chance of working and can also be taken up to 120hours post sex.

My understanding is that they are less effective the longer it’s been since intercourse so I’m not sure how likely to work now but good luck
