to go on a work trip when DC is ill

So 2 year old DS has conjunctivitis. Well in himself, but hates having his eyes cleaned multiple times a day.

I’m due to travel tomorrow evening for a long work meeting on Wednesday (engineering - has to be on site, remote joining is not an option, I’m not vital to the proceedings but it will create more work for me and others if I’m not there).

DH is more than capable of looking after DS but I’ve got an insane dose of mum guilt, because I was very much looking forward to a peaceful night’s sleep in a Premier Inn, and waking up to my alarm at a reasonable time rather than a gentle smack in the face from a toddler.

AIBU to go?

Of course you should go, it's conjunctivitis!

Happy1982ish · 06/12/2021 13:36

Absolutely need to go

You are at the start of the journey of being a working mum

Conjunctivitis is NOT enough to let down work

Save it for when genuinely needed

MelonTits · 06/12/2021 13:36

@BlameItOnTheBlackStar

Of course you should go, it's conjunctivitis!
He’s my PFB, I have no gauge of what’s serious! Blush

He's not Ill! Save parental leave for when he is ill.

NuffSaidSam · 06/12/2021 13:37

YANBU

He'll be fine.

Fatandfifty49 · 06/12/2021 13:37

I thought it was something more serious. Go!

LakeShoreD · 06/12/2021 13:37

It’s only conjunctivitis, our nursery doesn’t even exclude as long as it’s being treated. And he’s being looked after my his other parent! Of course you should still go on your work trip.

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 06/12/2021 13:37

That's equivalent to missing a work thing because your kid has headlice.

Non issue at all, its a bit of gunk in his eyes.

housemaus · 06/12/2021 13:44

YANBU. DS will be fine, conjunctivitis isn't fun but it's not serious, and toddlers get ill loads because they're tiny germ vectors - save your cancelling work things for when he's got a stomach bug or something where you really, really don't want to leave him :)

MelonTits · 06/12/2021 13:46

Righto, mind is made up. Agreed @housemaus, this is about the seventh consecutive thing he’s had in recent weeks and definitely the most mild, it’s just the only one that has happened at the same time as a long-distance site visit.

Conjunctivitis is not a kid being ill. Go and be guilt free.!!

stalkersaga · 06/12/2021 13:49

It's conjunctivitis? That's nothing! They don't even have to stay off school!

Honestly you'll never be at work in the next 8 years or so if you miss this for a perfectly well child who has a perfectly functional other parent. Go, enjoy the breakfast and having the whole bed to yourself.

Franca123 · 06/12/2021 13:50

It's just conjunctivitis!

MiniPumpkin · 06/12/2021 13:51

Go

MindyStClaire · 06/12/2021 13:52

Don't just go, run! Grin

Happy1982ish · 06/12/2021 13:56

If you did
You would have to lie about your reason
Because any parent (or indeed any one!) would be Hmm and actually likely pissed odd

SoftPillow · 06/12/2021 14:02

Of course you should go.

Would your DH be considering not going on a work trip because DC had conjunctivitis and you were at home to look after them? Of course he wouldn't.

Camii · 06/12/2021 14:22

Missing the point but all mine were born with a blocked tear duct and gooey eyes frequently made worse by a cold or getting ill in some other way.
After many trips to get anti biotic drops and ointment my amazing pharmacist recommended some homeopathic drops which worked so well and could stay in fridge for few weeks if it flared up again.
I'm not a big believer in homeopathy but they really helped me out.
I would ask your pharmacist if they can suggest something natural. I live abroad and can't remember the local brand. But it cleared it up in a day or two.
Enjoy your good nights sleep

StarfishDish · 06/12/2021 14:48

@MelonTits The Kleenex Allergy wipes work wonders for our daughter (10 months) when she has it Xmas Grin

Jibberjabberhutt · 06/12/2021 14:57

My first has conjunctivitis and blapharitis. He looks like absolute hell, poor kid. It’s not really sickness though, just a side effect of a former cold. Go. He’ll be fine.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/12/2021 14:59

You have to go! It’s work, not a jolly. He’ll be fine with his dad, and as you said, he’s well in himself.

I can’t imagine any man ever worrying about this!

Sexnotgender · 06/12/2021 15:01

Go😂 he’s not actually ill.
