WIBU to ask new job to start later?

I recently got a new job and handed my notice in at my old job. Everything fine and due to start the new job on Monday. Both admin roles but moving from a small company to NHS.

My old job haven't found anyone to replace me yet, and they've asked me if I can stay another month. I've never heard of this before, is this something that anyone else has ever been asked to do or done? I know they can't stop me from going but I don't want them to struggle either, they've been good to me.

WIBU to speak to the new job about starting later?

Absolutely don’t do this. You have an agreement with your new employer and have honoured your agreement with your current employer through the notice period you’ve worked. Your new employer shouldn’t be penalised because your last one can’t sort their recruitment.

It's unreasonable of old employer to ask this.

Your new organisation will not be impressed, I wouldn't even ask, it will look bad. Your new line manager will have booked time to settle you in, sort your induction, IT etc, and probably needs you in the role ASAP. IME you only get approval to recruit someone when it's pretty desperate anyway, so you can probably assume they need you asap.

No way op really bad idea if they'd asked you when you handed in your notice it wouldn't have been bad because you could've negotiated your new start date however your employer has now organised induction training hr have started your payroll security organised you badges and your.login details!!! It will look poor now to ask

Thank you for the replies. Yeah, I won't even ask. I don't want to start out in the new job on the wrong foot and look like I'm not committed or something. Thanks for talking some sense into me!

thank god you're not thinking of asking this of your new employer - as a manager, i'd question your judgement - your old employer's lack of organisation and cover isn't a problem to push onto your new employer. it's cheeky of them to even ask.

funnily enough i've only ever been asked this once, right at the start of my career, the only time i have had a massive pay raise.

my old manager asked me to extend my notice (from 2 months, unusual for how junior i was at the time) by another month.

when i pointed out that what he was asking was for me to accept a pay cut for the month AND piss off new employer from the start point .. with nothing to gain, he couldn't understand why i wouldn't agree... it was bizarre.

I wouldn’t your loyalty is to new company. The time to ask was when you gave notice before confirmation of start date.
