To ask if anyone has managed to get pregnant with recurrent BV?

As title really. I seem to suffer with recurrent BV after my period. Sometimes I use those BV gel things and it goes away after only a couple of uses, all good. Sometimes I need antibiotics but I really hate to keep having to go to the dr and get antibiotics and also to keep taking them as sometimes I then get bloody thrush, argh!

We’re TTC and this month has been particularly bad BV wise. I doubt we have any hope of conceiving despite having sex everyday throughout my whole fertile week. The gels didn’t do anything but I couldn’t get a drs appointment until next week!

Going forward, I’d like to come up with a more long term solution to BV. I’ve done quite about of research and in the states they seem to prescribe boric acid suppositories for women with recurrent BV which seems to knock it on its head once and for all. However when I asked my Dr about it he said he couldn’t prescribe it.

So I guess I have 2 Q’s...has anyone successfully managed to conceive with recurrent BV and also, has anyone managed to come up with a proper, long term solution for BV?

TIA!

You can’t get boric acid in the UK, you have to order from the US or somewhere else it’s available. Also, boric acid is not advised in pregnancy so you would have to hold off TTC whilst trying to clear up the BV. Have you tried Multigyn actigel?

No I haven’t. I use the BV Activ Gels and the Canesbalance ones. I’m thinking the gels just mask the problem though rather than solve it, they don’t treat the cause.

I don’t douche, don’t wear tight fitting underwear, I’m a fit and healthy weight, don’t use perfumed stuff down below or in the bath/ shower. Literally have no idea why it keeps coming back, but it does, after every bloody period so I’m assuming it’s hormonal.

I thought perhaps a probiotic or something might help but there are so many marketed and don’t want to keep wasting money on products that don’t work.

There are optibac for women probiotics that some have success with but they are expensive. VSL3 and Symprove currently have the most evidence behind them (not specifically for BV), but neither are cheap either. If you haven’t tried multigyn I’d give it a try.

Does your partner get treated for BV? I know he doesn't have the V but there is a new study which isn't yet underway which hypotheses that there could be an element of transmission. I've actually seen tiktoks from a woman regarding this hence my search for more reliable sources. It might be worth looking into.

I'm sure the gels say not to use if tc. I had this problem with an ex partner (not tracking, just constant BV) turned out it was the sec causing it - it went away the second we split and never came back. I tried all the things suggested. Only the antibiotics worked properly - maybe a longer course of antibiotics , avoid the gels and avoid sex til your fertile time to give a break

Sorry loads of typos. Wasn't ttc but was having regular sex. Turned out it was the second with my partner causing it. Not sure if it was something he was carrying or the sperm acidity, the friction or what bit 100% was the cause

If you’re on TikTok - go follow @roxanneramsey. She’s American but has suffered a lot and has lots of ideas. I believe she has a child.

Twinsforthewin · 05/12/2021 18:14

Yes, I have 👍

Tips for getting rid of it...
Stop smoking (if you do)
Drink less
Eat loads of live yoghurt
Probiotics
No soap (I use saugella, works brilliantly)
Avoid sugar if it's flaring up

Thanks all.

I’ll give the multigyn and a couple of other things a go. Just getting fed up now Sad we’re not getting pregnant and I’m convinced this is partly the reason

and i started taking boots live friendly bacteria tablets
worked a treat for me

PrivateParty · 05/12/2021 19:22

Yeah might be something in the comment about your partner. I'm sure I read that they can be carriers as such...

I'm certain the gels will be as much as an issue as the bv. I found the balance activ the best of all the gels but I'm certain it states not to use if ttc as it acts as a barrier almost like a spermicide
