Is this going to get DS mugged?

DH is a fan of bikes. He has a Very Expensive mountain bike that he uses once every couple of years!
DS has grown out of his kids bike and needs a new bike to cycle to and from high school when he starts next September. I’ve managed to convince my 6ft husband that no our 4ft8 son can’t “just use Dad’s bike” so DH is going to buy him one of his own. Fine. But he is looking at spending up to £1000. On a bike for an 11 year old to ride to school. We live in an averagely nice area but AIBU that this is going to make DS a target? I don’t want him to get knifed for his bike!!

The insurance wouldn't cover it as he had "voluntarily relinquished possession of the bike"

I'm amazed that an insurance company would say this. If the bike was insured for theft/mugging, they should have paid out. There must be an ombudsman who can overturn this?

I agree agreement under threat of violence is not voluntary.

You're husband is being ridiculous. Far too expensive a bike to ride to school. It'll definitely get nicked.

Gosh I didn’t expect so many answers!
So DS and I cycle together I’d say weekly in warmer weather and once a month in winter. By the time he gets to high school next year I’m sure it won’t look new. Thanks to all the posters mentioning carrera bikes, sounds like the brand to go for, going to take DS to look at some and have a try.

Round mine people don’t get mugged for bikes, but expensive bikes frequently get nicked once left alone.
