What the hell is this noise?!

So at night time / early morning I sometimes hear what I can only describe as a noise that sounds like the sound you would get if you were to run your fingers over a few letters on your phone / iPad -like a high pitch clicking noise. Sometimes it's around 3/4 'clicks' that are always close together sometimes there Might a tiny pause and then another few clicks sound. But they always have the same fast rhythm.

It happens when we are all in bed, making no movements so it's not like we are walking around and it's making the floor shake at all.

Can any one help with any suggestions on what on earth it might be!

I've been hearing it now for a few months,

Expansion of heating pipes and system, phone charging devices.....

dancingmonkey · 04/12/2021 23:52

@benelephant

Another vote here for mouse too. They make weird clicking noises.
Oh no 🙈 I don't ever hear any scurrying around so never considered it could be a mouse

Another vote for mice, they try and get in somewhere warm for the winter and the first time we noticed was a very quiet tap tap tapping in the roof.

Emanchego · 04/12/2021 23:53

I had this noise for a while before having a mice problem.

How did you manage to get rid of them?

Call pest control, your council might even do it for free. There are different ways, some more humane than others but old fashioned traps did it for us (that’s was definitely a job for DP!)

We're there any other signs though that is was mice other than the noise? To me what I can hear sound more electronic almost and it's weird that the rhythm and sound is alway the same. I don't know if an animal could do that

No, it was just a noise, but we do live near fields and the neighbours warned us to expect some ‘lodgers’ after harvest 😬😬. DP went in the loft soon after and saw droppings 🤢

KittyKel · 05/12/2021 00:13

Hopefully it’s not for you but I’d investigate to rule it out

YouokHun · 05/12/2021 00:18

I wonder how old your house is @dancingmonkey? If you hear a sound of say about five just audible clicks in quick succession then a moments break then the same again, and you can only really hear it when the house is quiet then it does sound like Deathwatch Beetle in the timbers of your house. I’m just going on my experience of that sound in three houses, so I agree with @BingoandBluey. Mice (which I also have plenty of experience of) make more general noise and tend to leave evidence, especially in the spring and autumn when they’re moving in and out.

I hope it isn’t DWB as the house has to be treated and it’s £££!

chickenpie1984 · 05/12/2021 00:18

My blink security camera makes a 'click, click, click' sound for around 30 seconds when activated IF the batteries are really low. Sometimes a random tree/ squirrel/ cat sets it off. Could it be that?

IVflytrap · 05/12/2021 00:18

Neighbours opening or closing their blinds. Would explain why it happens at night and in the morning.

We had these (diagnosed by me posting like this on MN!) but it was continuous through the night. We had a leak and they were in some damp wood.

Emanchego · 05/12/2021 15:00

It took me ages and I still get one now and then. I started with sticky pads and snap traps, but didn't have much luck with the traps as the mice are too light to set them off. They were just eating whatever I'd secured to the trap. The problem never resolved so I got an electronic trap from screwfix, this has helped massively. Remove the battery part, then in the trap section there are two 'doors' at the entrance, I smear some peanut butter on there, and put more in the back of the trap. The back of the trap has small holes they could eat through so I taped the outside of that part up.

Is it not just the pipes cooling down as the hearing goes off?

OneFootintheRave · 05/12/2021 15:26

Termites?

Ilovenutellaaaaa · 05/12/2021 15:29

Op is it happening at the same time every night? And in the same part of the house?...tonight why not wait for it and see If you can figure out where (which direction) the sound is coming from...e.g could it be coming from a plug socket clicking and popping

I can also hear and recognise the clanking sound from the pipes heating up. It's definitely a different sound. I guess it could be from them cooling down as it does happen maybe an 1 or so after heating goes of at night. But I sometimes hear in the morning when the heated has been off all night, and I don't have a timer for it to come on.

They have net curtains!

The mystery goes on, I'll see if I hear it again tonight and think if any of your suggestions make sense!

Not sure it's exactly the same time, I just notice it when I am in bed either at night or Morniing. Id say it's always coming from same place as volume is alway the same

Fridge/freezer?
I think the bedroom is too far away To make louder enough noise

Another vote for wind in air vents . We hear this from the vents of the utility room which is below our bedroom window.
