Hi , my daughter needs braces . Her dentist nhs agrees .
Before the pandemic the waits were pretty horrendous 2-3 years . Now well who knows .
She's 12 and really insecure about her teeth .
Was wondering how much it would be for me to pay ?. Thanks

Private cost us £3700 for top and bottom train tracks but ceramic instead of metal (metal would have been £3400)

XiCi · 05/12/2021 00:10

The NHS waiting list is 5 years now. Have just paid privately for 11 year old dd - £1,800

EmpressCixi · 05/12/2021 00:10

I think I paid £7 each DC. Free on NHS. Referred by Dentist to Orthodontist. Was only a 2 month wait. However, you only get one retainer for free and they do wear out as are plastic and have to be worn every night for life. So have replaced those for around £150 a set a couple times.

Pedalpushers · 05/12/2021 00:13

I think most private orthodontics range from 1500-3000 depending on what needs doing.

£2k for DC1 top and bottom train tracks - all in price included all check ups and a set of retainers at the end.
Free (NHS) for DC2 who also had train tracks as above, but four teeth removed too.

My dc (3 of them) cost 3-4k each. The first two started treatment at around 12 which i now regret. I went to a different ortho for my 3rd dc and she recommended waiting until about 15/16 as the jaw can continue growing until 18 or 19, sometimes even 21 for boys. Just my experience.

Saracen · 05/12/2021 01:20

Doesn't it depend what needs doing? I'm sure your orthodontist would give you a quote if you asked, and give you an idea how long you'd be waiting if you go private. My dd's orthodontist would have charged I think £150 for an initial consultation.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 05/12/2021 02:12

Just shy of £4k for top and bottom train tracks for my DD we are based in the South East. Treatment took around 18 months.

@22Giraffes

NHS so free for both kids, treatment started within weeks of referral, during covid. I do realise how lucky I am when others are waiting years.
Posts like this are just making me really angry (obvs not at the posters but at what is happening in this country). Dd was just put on a waiting list and told it would be minimum 3 years. We decided to go private and found that actually the waiting list is 5 years. She actually needs dental surgery on a root before braces can be fitted which could kill an adult tooth if left. This would still be 1.5 years waiting list for the surgery so we also have to go private for that. Its disgusting that children in some areas are left for 5 years with possible drastic consequences and others are just seen in a matter of weeks. The NHS shouldn't be a postcode lottery
Schmoozer · 06/12/2021 21:03

Clearly a postcode lottery - 5 year wait list for
Orthodontist in our locality

LynetteScavo · 06/12/2021 21:06

I've no idea how long the wait was - definitely couple of years pre-Covid.When we got the apt it was clear DD didn't qualify on the NHS, so I paid £2,200 in instalments. Braces (top and bottom) were on for 18 months. Worth every penny.

VitalsStable · 06/12/2021 21:16

Eldest free n NHS, middle DC £4600 as needed palate widening so had something called orthotropics and youngest is going to have to have the same so presume will be same cost.

Lulu1919 · 06/12/2021 21:31

We were quoted £7000
Luckily we managed to get though NHS as her teeth were causing pain
