Why does it get harder to drink the older you get?!

I’m only mid - late ish 30s but I find I just can’t drink anymore! Am I the only one?! Such a lightweight, get horrible hangovers and more like to choice a hot chocolate or cup of tea over a glass of Prosecco now… what’s happened to me?! When did I become so boring lol!

I'm 42 and over the last year my tolerance has gone down the toilet. It seemed to come out of nowhere.

Went on an evening out the other week, had 2 large glasses of red, even had food with it, but felt uneasy at bedtime and a bit rough the next day Shock

I've taken to the tesco non alcoholic fizz, and the gallo summer rose wine which is only 4% but the downside is I'll get through the bottle because it's so quaffable. I still drink a good single malt but have it with ice (but then I always did). Will have a max 2 G&T. Haven't gone completely off red wine but 2 medium glasses will do me now.

I was never a good drunk anyway, I'd start feeling the ill effects (room spinning, hot and cold shivers, being sick) the same night. Could never just go to sleep and be crap the next day. Last time I was that bad was over a year ago.

I’m glad it’s not just me! It’s not that I want to drink loads at all, I’d just like to be able to have a couple of drinks without feeling poorly the next day, more for the social element!

Some of it for me is selective memory. I remember the good times I had in my 20s much more easily than I remember paying for them the next day. I also care more now about not losing the run of myself, so am more likely to be monitoring myself for signs I've had enough. But generally I think slowing metabolism, being out of practise and being 2 stone lighter has turned me into a lightweight.

I can drink more now than in my younger days (I’m in my 50’s). When I was young I wasn’t a regular drinker so would get drunk very quickly, and suffer awful hangovers. So it was a big nights out only thing.

Once the DC grew up I started drinking wine at home in the evenings. Big mistake. Now I can drink a bottle of red and not feel drunk at all, sleep like a baby and no hangover. It isn’t great. I should really do something about it.

I stopped in my late 30s for weight / vanity / anxiety/ sleep quality reasons. Life is a lot easier without it, it was not helping me the way I thought it was

Just found this thread! I am terrible now with drinking (40s). Especially prosecco!! It sets my heart racing and makes my body tremor!! It only takes 2 or 3 glasses
