To wish schools would scrap Christmas jumper day?

DC2 has a couple of little classmates with difficult home lives, one in particular without much money. There are some Christmas jumper days coming up and I have been thinking about how tough it must be to always be the child with no jumper.

I know as children grow up you can't avoid the inequalities but it would be great if we could at least stop it being an issue at primary school. (And of course there are the families who buy jumpers when they can't really afford them).

I agree with you op. And also think infant schools should have a nativity dress up box so there is no need for parents to provide the outfit.

Our PTA collects Christmas jumpers so that there are spares for those children who don't have one for the day. It's awful when you see children upset because their parents forgot (or couldn't afford it).

Lots of parents can't really afford this, it's not fair on those children or their parents.
Also some children's families don't even celebrate Christmas as it's not part of their religion, so totally inappropriate for those children.
A ritual that needs to disappear in schools imo.

My kids school buys some jumpers and they get handed around each year and this is in the private sector

I completely understand so many parents struggling this time of year, but honestly is it fair to remove a day that’s been around for years? I got my kids Christmas jumpers from primark in the sale for £2.50 for this year :) you can make your own I remember back in the 90s my mam stapling tinsel to the bottom of mine and using a sticker in the middle 😂 so many ways to include kids in Christmas jumper day that doesn’t involve money, I always donate my children’s old jumpers to charity’s etc. I always look around even Facebook market place give them away, this day comes every year so parents are fully aware months in advance to grab one well before the price inflates in December. Honestly I know circumstances cause low income but I’ve seen so many parents who don’t have much have internet or smoke have the latest iPhone false lashes on etc …, there is some genuine people who struggle who need help then others who waste the child benefit etc on rubbish i have this one friend who is on benefits she smokes drinks her partner gambles and buys weed :/ and is forever asking me for money and because I cant stand to see her kids starve or do without I always give her tenners etc. Don’t assume all parents are struggling because a lot really do waste every penny - for those that need help then I agree donate the bairns old jumpers to schools to give to bairns in December who cant afford one :) it’s a lovey act of charity And kindness xx

Our school does Christmas jumper day but they say just wear something festive. Lots of children just like wearing a bit of tinsel or a Christmas. The poorer children certainly don't stand out and parents don't appear to feel the pressure to buy jumpers especially for the one day.

Mine have Christmas jumpers anyway. They wear them throughout December. I get the next size up so it lasts a few years. Then they become hand me downs then pass them on to friends children.

I am with you OP. I'd like Christmas jumpers to be consigned to history, not just for the reasons you give. Low use clothing probably made in sweatshops in developing countries.

I didn't buy jumpers this year. My kids aren't really fussed about them and they're only worn once or twice. I just make sure they have a red or a green long sleeved teeshirt and send them in in that for Christmas plays, concerts and jumper days. I did get a Christmas hat for DS, it will last years.
