To wonder what the school’s policy is on informing parents that meds have been given

Y8 DD was recently diagnosed with a medical condition and so has meds kepr with the school first aider.

DD came home today saying that she had to have the meds as she was unwell. Do the school not tell me when meds have been administered?

I need to make sure another dose isn't given too soon.

The school should have a medication policy.

But I think on the whole they would expect a child by yr8 to be taking some responsibility for knowing what they had had.

If she's 12/13 years old and no SEN I wouldn't expect the school to call you.

If she's 8 years old or has SEN then the school should have informed you that they'd give her medication.

I think by the teen years, the school don't actually give the child the medicine they simply hold it and the child takes it when they need it. So it's up to her to tell you she's taken it.

If you've left the medication in her care surely its with the understanding she's in charge of when it needs giving, how much and at what time.

If you've left it in the office then it would be up to the school.

If she's year 8 and NT she surely should be able to bd responsible for the taking of her medication.

My 7 year old has medicine in school. She tells me when she's had it now as she can administer herself, albeit with supervision, and that's inline with the school policy. Up until last year a member of staff would help and I'd get a note saying what she'd had when and who it was given by. 7 does seem young, but she's mature for her age and understands her condition and medicine well.

She's in y8 so old enough to manage this herself assuming no SEN.

In our secondary school, irrespective of age, the students are given a slip with the information on it - date, time, dose etc. Normally they are crumpled into pockets, shoved in bags, or thrown away. You might want to check with her to see if she was given a slip. If not, call the school and ask about their policy.

I work in a school & whenever meds are given to us by parents/carers, they complete a form re. dosage, frequency, etc & sign to give their consent for us to administer accordingly throughout the school day. We then fill out a meds record whenever we do so. That's it. We wouldn't necessarily inform the parents we'd done it. However, if it's a periodic thing, we would undoubtedly tell them at pick up time &/or if the child is SEN & less likely to say anything themselves.

Why not just ask the school?

ChangeChingyChange · 03/12/2021 17:30

What medication is it? Would it make her seriously unwell if they didn't tell you and she had another dose? I'd put the onus on her to tell you when she's had it at school as she is old enough really.
