To be annoyed that opting out of MN cookies takes 5 actual minutes

Just that - to stick to necessary cookies and opt out of trackers and data collection by third parties, you have to individually deselect dozens of companies. Rather than offering a button which enables you to “Reject all“

I’ve just timed and it took a solid 5 minutes, working quickly. That’s pretty onerous right?

AIBU to a) find it very annoying when websites do this (almost like they’re trying to wear you down so you just go - OK FINE, have my data).

And b) feel very disappointed that Mumsnet does this.

I think sites that offer an "Accept All" button should be obliged to offer a "Reject All" button too. Failing that, all options should default to off and people can activate them if they want to.

I agree with you and op

Agree @MorningStarling !

I agree. I warm to sites that have the object to all button and feel sites that don't are underhanded, hoping for people to get tired of clicking the off button and just accept what's left.

Twitchynose · 02/12/2021 11:10

Does my head in all the rejecting on other sites, can’t remember doing it on her. What really annoys me is the way they have sneaky hidden menus to more cookies, eg vendors and legitimate interests. You then look at the legitimate interests and there’s about 200 you have to individually reject. It should be illegal to not have a reject all except functionally necessary button!

Exactly @KeepTwirling !

If there isn’t a reject all button, nowadays I mostly just leave the website.

There are so many dishonest ‘tricks’ that these websites use to try and dissuade you from protecting your data.

Ever had the ones where the page ‘sticks’ so you can’t see the button at the bottom allowing you to opt out. It’s only if you keep trying to scroll down that -eventually- it shows you the bottom of the page.

I notice these, I’m sure other people notice them too. You can just imagine some stupid presentation where someone smugly tells them that “xx% fewer people opt out when you make the button really difficult to press - clever eh!”

It makes me really dislike any company that does these things.

Can you tell me how to get to the correct page. I click privacy policy. When I get to the Cookie section it says click here and that just takes me back to the top of the privacy policy. help!

It's not just annoying, it's actually completely against GDPR regulations...

www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-57306802

All sites must have a clear accept/reject option. It's been brought up in the tech world before about how many sites dance around the rules to trick you into accepting their tracking cookies. There are plans to look into this and hopefully the rules will be revised/properly enforced soon.

Do you think MN will keep my reply or this post up? Smile

Yes, it does violate GDPR! Thank you @WindyWindsor. I have been waiting for a very quiet moment to send a list of all these shysters to the ICO.

I believe 3rd party cookies are ending in the near future? Expect to see lots of 1st party cookies crop up...

I recommend either reporting this thread to make sure HQ notice it - they might not otherwise.

fakereview · 02/12/2021 12:19

I agree there should be a reject all button. It's so annoying when they keep putting it up every few weeks, too. Once you've opted out, you've opted out, it's unlawful to keep asking.

ChicCroissant · 02/12/2021 12:22

MN have said in another thread that they will be looking at this in the New Year.

Yes exactly that as well! That is another one that drives me mad, when you have to go through the same process next time you visit the site. It’s a war of attrition.
