Sorry for using AIBU but I need as much input as possible.

I have two children with ASD and school have recommended it.

It’s for a number of weeks when we’re both at work so we’re happy to do it but it’s a considerable commitment so don’t want to if it’s not helpful.

Have you done it? Was it good/helpful etc?

Thanks in advance.

I worked as a family support worker in a local authority which offered this and we had amazing results from it. It’s very expensive to run because the training is intense and specific - you can’t just give a training manual to anyone and expect them to be able to deliver the course. Only trainers with years of experience and expertise were able to run the course.

In the end the LA was unable to continue funding the course because of the costs of training the trainers. If I was offered this, I would grab it with both hands.

That’s very helpful - thank you.

I think our LA is unusual in finding things like this - it’s one reason we aren’t planning to move house anymore.

I did it, before my DSs were officially diagnosed with ADHD and ASD. It was great, really worthwhile. It's not offered much here anymore but the primary my DCs go to are thinking of investing in it and I'm strongly supporting that! I think everyone should do it!

Oh, and if you can both do it, do! DH and I do clash a bit because we're coming at things from different angles and if he'd done the course he would understand more.

Merryoldgoat · 02/12/2021 09:57

Great - we’ll go for it then. DH will definitely do it too.

Thank you for posting

I used to run this course when I was working. It's very good and parents gave positive feedback.
The only caveat is that it isn't specifically targetted at children with ASD. It's based on behavioural psychology and may need a bit of adapting for children who are neurotypical.
