How much electricity do you use?

Our electricity is around 100 a month. We don't have a tumble dryer. Boiler is combination so runs on gas. Lots of tech but looking this up this shouldn't add up to so much. Got rid of the fish tank when the last ancient fish went to the great pond in the sky so not lighting or heating for this. I work from home but just run a laptop and screen. Lights go off and are all enery

@Kinsters

280kwh per week! I just looked at our bill and I'm shocked it's so high compared to everyone else. We have solar panels which offset our usage almost exactly so I don't feel too bad about it from an environmental perspective but still...

No idea what it all goes to - we use aircon at night, have a big fridge freezer and a mining computer but we don't have a dishwasher nor a tumble dryer, rarely watch TV. Most of it is probably aircon.

Yes, probably aircon. A single window one starts at about 1kW, while a central unit is northwards of 3kW.

@Rno3gfr We keep the TV, Kettle, toaster, lamps unplugged and we save about £20 a moth! Everything still uses electricity, even when plugged in!

That's not how electricity works. Your kettle and toaster are using nothing plugged in until you press the button down.

My ninja is really expensive to run, it's great but the cost stops me using it so much (we have a smart meter so I can watch it eating the pennies Sad).

Danikm151 · 02/12/2021 17:46

Rethink getting a smart meter. It’s great because you can track how much you are spending down to half hour increments.
Check how much your standing charge is too.

what is a ninja?

dementedpixie · 02/12/2021 20:58

Is it a table top cooking device?
We have a ninja food processor/blender thing

@Kinsters Mining computer? As in Bitcoin? That is supposed to be heavy on the energy consumption but don't know how it is at the household level. Get some fans instead of aircon!

IJoinedJustForThisThread · 03/12/2021 09:56

Good heavens, how is my electricity costing so much compared to everyone else’s? The supplier put my direct debit up from £93pm to £162pm earlier in the year to “balance it out”. I take meter readings abs send to them when requested.
I live by myself in a one bedroom house! I never use the oven, I don’t work from home. Although my hearing is electric (plug in panel heaters) it’s not like the house is tropical - it’s usual about 13 degrees indoors.

It's 30°C year round - during the day we use fans but night time I need AC! And yes, DH runs his computer to max and uses the excess power for some cryptocurrency mining. It's actually made pretty good profits but I'm sure uses a lot of energy.

WhereYouLeftIt · 04/12/2021 01:24

We average 115kWh per week, so about 16kWh each day. If we're away on holiday, the unoccupied house will still use 8 or 9kWh daily.

but without a cost of units and a daily charge, how can anyone know how much electric you're using? It could be you use an expensive company?
Chely · 04/12/2021 15:14

We have a smart reader.
Highest electric usage in a month this year was 442kWh. 8 of us in the house, I do a lot of washing and we have multiple devices runing/charging daily. I don't have a tumble dryer but we have 2 dehumidifiers running when I can't line dry. Gas heating, kids terrible for leaving all lights on but led bulbs.

Chely · 04/12/2021 15:17

I got rid of my slow cooker when we got our smart reader, it's not too great on energy usage.
We do have a dishwasher, love that thing.

Inquisitivearchitect · 04/12/2021 15:27

We used 144kwh last month but we’re on a standard tariff as we moved into a house with a prepayment meter Sad Scottish Power have been arses and slow about changing it to a normal direct debit & smart meter combo.

That’s 2 WFH adults and 1 Xbox mad child Smile tumble dryer and washing on about twice a week. No dishwasher
