To ask if Sassoon haircuts are worth it?

I normally go to very generic, cheapish hairdressers in Cornwall. I'm in London for the night and have the opportunity(?) to pay £130 for a haircut this afternoon.

My hair is bone straight, reasonably thick, and about shoulder length. It's very very boring and I tie it up all the time through lack of inspiration. I hated my last half a dozen haircuts which have all been really crap.

I also box dyed it last night, which I can't imagine they'll approve of but "meh".

WIBU to spend £130? Is this brand actually worth the money or will I get another crap haircut, just spending more money than usual?

I used to go to the one in St. Paul's and loved it so I would say yes.

LittleGwyneth · 01/12/2021 13:54

Do you have a style in mind? They won't be able to look at you, decide what will suit you, cut it and leave you looking like a supermodel. Sadly. If you turn up with a picture of a haircut you want they'll be able to replicate it, probably extremely well. If it's just for a trim then possibly a waste of money.

trimtops · 01/12/2021 13:55

I was trained there and used to work in Bond Street, so yes!!

RedCarsGoFaster · 01/12/2021 13:57

Hmm, good point about a style in mind - I am probably being unrealistic. I don't want a mullet or a pixie cut, I don't want a fringe, and I don't want them to curl my hair when they dry it. That's about my limit.

Otherwise, I'm very fat and 40 so probably well outside their intended demographic.

I've always suited the "Rachel" cuts but no-one seems to be able to do them properly these days. I've not had a single hairdresser thin my hair, use razors etc in years despite asking for a heavily layered cut.

You’re more likely to get a better cut in London than in some other more rural Sassoon salons (I’m talking from experience here). If you can afford it, definitely do it. Worst case scenario is you hate it. It’s hair; it’ll grow back. And if you love it, you’ve got the basis of a style to maintain.

You are likely to get a disapproving look at the box colour though 🙂

The image isn't me - it's one I've found of what I'm basically after.

i meant, after re-reading, for a trim, (an inch or so,) is too much money, for a restyle, it's not.

SofaKingKnotBovvered · 01/12/2021 14:01

Cheaper doesn't mean bad, Are they a franchise?did you have a consultation first?

TheFutureIs · 01/12/2021 14:14

When I was at uni in London I used to go to their training academy. Had some amazing cuts there. Often got used as a demo model as I'd arrive and say they could do whatever they wanted and I wasn't limited for time so I'd be getting a cut by a highly qualified tutor for hardly any money

RedCarsGoFaster · 01/12/2021 14:16

@SofaKingKnotBovvered I've only been to independent salons, not sure there are any chains near me. I appreciate that means each hairdresser is probably self-employed and renting a chair rather than trained up in-house.

The worst one, I just zipped my mouth and left but it was totally uneven - literally long pieces hanging from a bob despite me asking for a straight bob that time. I should have got her to fix it but I didn't trust her, and she was the best recommended hairdresser in the town!

Honestly, the best haircuts I've ever had have always been at the local hairdresser training salon at the college which has unfortunately closed down. The attention to detail there was second to none.

@TheFutureIs I'm going to do that next time I know I'll be in London (doesn't happen often). I have had spectacular cuts at training colleges, where even if it's students doing it, the instructors are monitoring and correcting any issues.

The best haircut I ever had was about 18yrs ago by a chap who sadly moved to Oz two weeks later. I walked out that hairdressers on Cloud 9 and was so confident that I pulled the fittest bloke of my life that night :-D Love a good haircut, a bad one just makes me feel so unattractive.

If you were really into hair care, hair styling and general hair matters it'd probably be fun, but given you don't seem very interested in hair it sounds about as much good as buying a 130 fishing rod. What's the point?

Sassoon hasn't been relevant for years. There are far better salons with amazing stylists, but again if you're not really fussed it would still just be a trim and a ponytail to you.

Idony · 01/12/2021 15:07

The image you posted is all styling, not cut. Few cuts will always look good no matter how little you do to them. Styling will be needed. Products, tools etc. If you're not into that then a cut won't pick up the slack.

Skysblue · 01/12/2021 23:46

That is high, maybe get a cheaper stylist.

I used to go to Vidal Sassoon when I lived in London and no one else has been able to make my hair anywhere near as nice as they did. It isn’t all styling, they are very very good.

£130 seems high though. Maybe just get a cut and rough dry?

BurntO · 01/12/2021 23:50

Nope. Shop around. Big brand and prices don’t guarantee quality.

RedCarsGoFaster · 02/12/2021 00:56

@BurntO shop around how? I've worked on recommendations for years, all were shite. I went to the leading, best rated salon in Plymouth. Also shite. And rude to boot. I'm not sure how else to judge hairdressers? And a salon can be great, but that particular person rubbish.... Its a minefield!
