Leaving to drive

I really need to learn to drive, it would make a massive difference to my life but I’m really anxious at the thought of driving and feel nervous even thinking about it (I have had lessons in the past but I didn’t feel anxious about it) my mum said it’s an age thing and as you get older you become more anxious which is why it’s better to drive when you are younger and have the confident. Has anyone else learnt to drive despite being anxious about it? Aibu to want to learn to drive?!

@TurnUpTurnip in that case find the right instructor then block book lessons! I bet you'll pick it back up in no time at all. A few people on my intensive course were the same as you, had previously learning experience but life got in the way they all seemed to progress very fast

I’m going to bite the bullet and start lessons again, you’ve all given me the confidence. I’m glad it’s normal to be a bit anxious, definitely going with automatic!

This thread is really reassuring. I'm 39 and started lessons three months ago. It's slow progress and I am SO NERVOUS and anxious in the car. Plus I just find it hard. It's like a puzzle I can't piece together - I can find bits but not all at once. You're all giving me faith.

Yes! Best of luck!

I hope you get on all right @TurnUpTurnip - there's a book which I read called The Girl's Guide to Losing Your L-plates by Maria McCarthy which was a very helpful read. Also there are books about taking the theory test which I pretended was a fun quiz which will prepare you.

@TurnUpTurnip

I think it’s the actual driving part that scares me, I’m not worried about crashing necessarily obviously I wouldn’t want to 😬 but I just can’t see myself driving if that makes sense?! I’m early 30s now and my daughter has a disability which makes it difficult to get around, I dream of how much easier my life would be if I could drive but then I worry maybe not everyone can drive and some people just have to accept they won’t ever learn?
You can definitely learn - the fact that you're even considering that you might not be great at it puts you ahead of most drivers who think they are utterly brilliant at driving when they are shit.

I'm just about to start learning aged 33. I don't really want to but the practical benefits seem quite necessary now with another DC on the way. Feeling very anxious about the whole thing but this thread has made me feel a bit better.
