Desogestrel and bleeding

Posting for traffic.
I started taking desogestrel (progesterone only pill) around 7 months ago whilst breastfeeding my son. I stopped BF around 3 months ago and periods seemed to go back to normal (had a little spotting while still BF).
But I've now been on my period for just over 2 weeks! I stopped taking the pill on Sunday hoping that would help but now on day 4 with no pill and still not stopped 😬
Anyone else have lots of bleeding while on it? Side effects include irregular periods, but surely 2 weeks is a bit much!

@SagiChelsea I'm the same - 2 months of nothing/spotting and then a full-blown period for 2 or 3 weeks at a time. This is on Cerelle/regular desogestrel depending on what they give me. I've been on it for almost 3 years and it's been like this pretty much the whole time.

My doctor said it was probably nothing to worry about but recommended I make an appointment to discuss things anyway - just in case you're thinking of the same!

Hi all I'm new to this, I have been on desogestrel for 3 months now. Was all good until 7th march and I have not stopped bleeding, called the doctor and going to put me on some kind of acid tablet. Had anyone stayed on this tablet and been ok after a while?

CTL80 · 27/03/2023 12:49

I know the feeling 😕

Cherrysoup · 27/03/2023 12:52

This is really interesting. I'm probably loads older than you (early 50s) and been on this for several years since the Mirena ran out. I've never had a scrap of bleeding in this time. It's been bliss!

I think the side effects can vary with this one. I took it for three months. I didn’t have a period at all. I also gained a dramatic amount of weight. This is just my experience though.

If you are worried then please see a doctor or nurse for advice 💐

For what it's worth, I had bleeding for best part of a month to begin with. (Nurse had warned me a few weeks was common when starting)But settled down and nothing since.

Also agreeing that the brand makes a difference. For me, Cerelle was bleeding most days for months, with Cerazette not bleeding at all.

I'm having issues too. I have been bleeding on and off since January. I've had my bloods taken today to check my thyroid. I need to Google the brand names but basically I've been taking it for four years now and no period. But since Jan regular / weekly bleeding. Still breastfeeding. I was having the lilac box and still taking from the last sheet but my new Persciption is the beige / cream box so I'm wondering if my doctor has changed the brand to see how I do

I know this is an old thread but are there any updates on this please? I’ve been taking desogestrel for over 18m and a few weeks ago had a small amount of spotting. Last week more heavy bleeding but still only when I wiped. It reduced/stopped for a day or two and now started again. The only thing I can think of is it started around the time I night weaned my 18m old, but I’m still breastfeeding him 2-3 times in the day. It’s worrying me soo much and I have what feels like ovulation pain in my right side. I have a doctor appointment booked but the earliest the can see me is in two weeks time and I can’t bear all this waiting.

Zanina · 25/04/2025 15:06

Hi @lakel14 I ended up going back on the combined pill. Doctor explained that the mini pill often just stops working so nothing wrong with my health. I did shift to the combined pill in time with stopping breastfeeding so it worked out for me. Try not to worry it is just the hormones of the pill most likely xx

Zanina · 25/04/2025 15:07

I'm taking Gedarel 30/150 microgram and all bleeding took a bit of time but has gone back to normal x

Lakel14 · 25/04/2025 19:00

Hi @Zanina thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Glad your issue was resolved easily! I saw the doctor this afternoon and she took some swabs to rule out infection and noticed a cyst on my cervix so has referred me to gynae to double check it’s just a cyst and nothing sinister. Fingers crossed I’ll get seen quickly and it’s good news. She didn’t seem to think hormones had anything to do with this so I’m a bit freaked out but trying to stay positive. I do feel a bit like a uti is coming on so maybe it is just an infection. Thanks again!

Yep. When first starting I bled/spotted almost continuously. Was assured it would settle. It eventually settled into a pattern ... of a week-long period every 2 weeks! I was on it for a total of 2 years in hopes it would settle further, but came off as was totally sick of it. My periods went back to every 28 days immediately.
