to think that people who say "did you get that from YouTube?" have no idea about YouTube?

I hear it a lot on here - "oh, you are the type of person who gets their information on YouTube" meaning it as some sort of insult to their intelligence, but the statement in itself shows a total lack of understanding about YouTube.

For example, I could watch a 1 minute clip of Chris Whitty on the BBC news.

Or I could watch the series of lectures Chris Whitty has done on YouTube about multiple public health issues through Gresham College.

e.g.

I can literally get university lectures on YouTube on any topic I choose

eg.

I can look up any academic that is in the news, and I will find a lecture from them / a talk from them in long form, that is, it is not in soundbites that are typical of the media, you can get in-depth knowledge from YouTube.

YouTube is just a platform - you can find content of all descriptions there - from cat videos to lectures from serious academics - so this 'insult' that is thrown around isn't actually an insult and is more a total lack of understanding of what YouTube can offer?

I have never heard anyone say that. The only thing I hear people say about You Tube is how brilliant is is when you need to find out how to do something.

FB OTOH...

I’ve never heard anyone say that either

Same here. It's common for people to say have you checked youtube, as there's often a great video to show or explain something. I've never heard it used in an insulting way.

It’s like the same people who moan about the Internet or Social Media. They choose to see only the negativity when there are so many positives ways to use these things and/or too lazy to actually look themselves vs taking someone else’s word for it.

I’ve learned so much on YouTube for all sorts of things whether it’s doing diy, gardening, learning new hairstyles and techniques, learning about different cultures and different foods, recipes, etc. I follow some influencers but that’s mainly due to lack of representation in mainstream media.

I've not heard that before either - here or irl.

I think it may be shorthand for "I think you have been pulled by the YT algorithm into watching many different clips that reinforce a particular viewpoint without pausing to consider there's a whole other set of YouTube videos putting another side of the argument ( that probably isn't even a argument) to the group of people who will be taking the polar opposite stand on this. Whereas the truth lies somewhere else entirely."
Maybe?

I see what you're saying but the fact that you're able to find good content doesn't negate the fact that there's a HUGE amount of unedited, ignorant, crap on there which is not subject to broadcasting rules/ codes of conduct or general scrutiny, opportunity to feedback to regulatory bodies or backed up by industry bodies. It's a free for all.
