Am I taking too many vitamins?

I take a women’s multivitamin which contains vitamin D and C, but I take an additional vitamin D and C tablet separately. I also have a spa tone iron sachet with orange juice every morning before breakfast.
My partner thinks I’m going to overdose on these.

Is there such a thing as taking too many?

Check the daily recommended against how much you are taking?

You can have too much vitamin D, but I suspect that what you are taking is probably still below the maximum dose available for sale.

Vitamin C is water soluble so you will just pee out any extra.

Vitamin c if you take too much you will just pee it out, might be worth a google for vit d as I’m unsure on that one. If you have been low in iron before it’s sensible to have a maintenance dose but if your iron levels are fine I would maybe drop that one

You need to google the recommended max dose for each thing and add up the total what you take of each and compare it. That’s the only way you’ll know. Off the top of my head I know the max dose for vitamin D is 4000. One spatone sachet of iron is fine and won’t make you overdose on iron (I suffer with long term anaemia and take 210mg ferrrous fumerate every day on prescription).

I think worrying about an overdose seems a bit silly based on what you've said here. The problem with the "women's vitamin" is that they are almost always such low levels as to be pointless. So I'd ditch that and then take things for which you need extra help.

Do you have specific reasons for taking vitamins D and C and the iron supplement? Having said that, there is research that most people in the UK are vitamin D deficient to at least some extent, particularly in the winter months so a small over the counter supplement is unlikely to do any harm and could be helpful. Ditto, most women could probably benefit from a small iron boost, which is all Spatone is (it certainly isn't enough if you're actually iron deficient). I'm not sure about vitamin C - I'd have thought that was one that is fairly easily got in sufficiently high dosage through diet and I've certainly never heard of any desperate need for it.

Full disclosure - I take a high OTC iron supplement (as per doctor's instructions as I'm trying to avoid iron tablets but my iron levels are too low), a Vitamin D supplement (also as per doctor's instructions), and an Omega3 supplement based on research I've done on the benefits, particularly for women with PCOS. Also, because omega 3 was recommended by a specialist following a mammogram for mild breast discomfort.

I would say just have a check-up and ask them to see your levels of C and D, but I don't really think you will have too much problem.

I live in a Mediterranean country with lots of sun (Spain) and after 6 months of daily intake of vitamin D3 I am now at normal range... And when we get more vitamin c than we need we pee it out.

Yes you can have too much.
Fat soluble vitamins are stored by the body, most your body takes what it needs and gets rid of the excess in urine.

It really depends how dark your skin is. A lot of people in hotter countries cover up more and wear sunblock a lot so don't get enough vit D. You will get more vit D on a cooler british summer day wearing no suncream than a hot Spain day with factor 50.

You can develop something called vitamin D toxicity (though you do have to take rather a lot). Unless you have a known deficiency, most doctors say there is no need for supplements if you have a balanced diet (with the exception of the recommended amount of vitamin D which may vary by ethnicity). As for vitamin C supplements, they mostly just give you vitamin enriched pee!

Just take one that has the RDA of a 100% of everything. Go to Holland and Barrett if you are confused but don't feel pressured to buy anything you can get it cheaper at boots:)

Look up the maximum recommended dose for them. That's the only way to know!

How much vitamin D do the individual and multivitamin contain each?

If you're taking too much vitamin C you'll know about it - you'll get loose stools.
