PRB Dobbies Santa disappointment

PFB met Santa this weekend
Paid £20 for a photo , meet and a toy.

Grotto was pretty ( if a bit rushed)
“Greeting elf” was stellar, award winning enthusiasm
But
Santa and photograph elf were terrible!?
I don’t think Santa even said hohoho? He may have been mute? Silently handed a present from the pile. Didn’t really try to engage with the baby.
Had to ask if he was going to hold baby for a photo.
So baby sat , fairly unbothered for the first minute or so , whist I assumed the skinny teen elf would try and get a snap - nothing - elf just starting about blanky unaware of baby’s time limits for such things
Eventually the baby started to squirm, and I asked if he was ready to snap yet?
Got baby to smile - elf talking to a staff member.
Finally presented a blown out photo of ME holding baby ( unflattering for both me AND PNB!)
Was so upset and asked the management for another photo attempt at least :( the female manager took one look at my distressed face and went “oh dear PNB first Xmas, I’ll better get another snap!” ) so that was something.
Santa still mute but teen elf jittery and needing prompting but took a slightly better photo.

Was I ?/AIBU? Are all grottos like this ? Do you need to hit Harrods to get a vaguely Christmassy experience? Is this just the start of paying for children’s things that are a let down - welcome to the club? If it’s digital and you have a time slot- what’s the harm in taking a FEW photos and letting you decide which one at the booth?

YABU - it’s not a professional shoot and it’s not actually Santa you’re meeting.

And it does sound snobby-do you fly your children directly to Santa’s village to meet him ?

Not at all, I thought Santa was supposed to be a mysterious being we never meet! So would only be disappointing if it's some guy with a polyester beard!

The quest for a good Santa experience!
Best ones we've done is Wonderland in Telford and Conkers in Leicester Leicestershire if anyone is near either of those.
Worst was Drayton Manor. Santa himself was lovely but it was so badly organised and expensive. Nothing magic about queuing and too much pushing you to spend more money!

RJnomore1 · 29/11/2021 09:54

Well no I don’t think you’re in reasonable at all, a little customer care is not a lot to ask. Also my oldest is 22 now and we took both mine to Santa ever year since they were born, never once looked back and thought what was I thinking. Do have some nice photos though (not professional standard but still lovely).

I think it was about £10 back then!

Illdoitinabit · 29/11/2021 09:55

I don't get why others are saying Santa isn't targeted for babies. Don't babies eventually grow into toddlers who are stupidly excited for Christmas? So if you've had a bad experience with one Santa you certainly aren't going to take your Santa mad toddler back to a miserable git! Plus word of mouth spreads quickly, if Santa can't be jolly with a baby then he's going to hate toddlers and children!!

OP let all your friends know he was rubbish and to avoid, hopefully next year you have a better experience!

RobinPenguins · 29/11/2021 09:59

YANBU to expect a wee bit of enthusiasm.

YABU to expect anything remotely approaching a professional photo. And we’ve never met a Santa yet who sits the child on his knee, and tbh I’d prefer they didn’t anyway.

Dixiechickonhols · 29/11/2021 10:06

I think experience sounds as to be expected. At least you got a photo you liked. I wouldn’t expect Santa to touch or hold any children (safeguarding + covid)
Usually they speak briefly with child - have you been good? but obviously can’t do that with a baby.

JumperooSue · 29/11/2021 10:40

I think you’d probably have been better off just walking round the Christmas light section of the garden centre and let the baby look, no way would I have paid for a baby that young to meet Santa. Welcome to parenthood where you plan these lovely things you always imagined doing and they occasionally are just not how you pictured in your head!
