The weirdest thing happened to me last night.

Posting here for traffic.

went sleep fairly early last night but was awoken at midnight and felt like I was choking. I jolted up and stood up and it went on for about 10 seconds or so then stopped, scared the poop out of Dp who thought I was dying. Felt like it was all in my throat. Chest and lungs felt unaffected, just felt like my throat was closing over.

It was like I I was making real deep choking noises but not a cough like a bark almost. Can't really explain it. I sat down took some deep breaths and it stopped. Was awake for a while after, like nothing has happened today.

I did have a little bit of a sore throat before bed and now today which isn't too bad and not all that unusual for me either. I have been suffering with acid reflux for the last 6 months or so on and off. Not severely affected usually. Whilst feeling like I was choking, I had an intense burning feeling in my throat. I did eat appallingly yesterday which didn't help. Could it be reflux related? Maybe I choked on some stomach acid or saliva?

I do quite often need to cough after eating with acid reflux.

Anyone else ever had this? Should I be concerned as a one off??

Google Sleep Apnoea

I get this! It's one of the reasons I like to eat dinner early and am not an evening / night snacker. My reflux is always better at night if it's been a while since I last ate.

Lansoprazole mentioned in another thread
Feeling Bloody fed up or similar 2nd or 3rd post.

It is worth getting acid reflux treated though OP: your oesophagus isn't built to withstand acid being in it on a regular basis so it's not great for its long term health for it to remain untreated. Obviously if you can treat with diet that's great but it is worth flagging again to the doctor if it recurs.

Can you raise the pillow end of the bed at all OP ?

I get this regularly at night, it's horrendous and makes me struggle not to gag, feels like I'm choking to death. I have to keep water by the bed and swallow it whilst deep breathing and eventually it subsides. I'm usually in the middle of a dream, will suddenly get the sensation and briefly start searching for water bottles or taps in the dream before waking up choking. It's acid reflux, I used to be on lanzoprazole but stopped due to scare stories of links to stomach issues and cancer. Need to discuss with GP and get back on it as also have a persistent dry cough due to reflux that's getting worse.

Thank you everyone. I am hoping it's just a one off but will keep an eye. My doctors are pretty pants at the minute. J know they are under immense pressure but they are still barely seeing anyone so impossible. Even my Dd has a pretty serious thing she needs checking out (some form of growth) and most likely a referral from doctors to elsewhere and they wouldn't see her to make referral. I've had to keep on and on at them. They still haven't seen her referred her now after weeks of trying! No other surgery in the area either so then or nothing.

Up until 6 months ago I never suffered from reflux much at all apart from occasionally or when pregnant.6 months ago I was going to a stressful time for many reasons and turned to food and I really suffered for a while. Nexium did work and ever since it's been intermittent. Some days fine and others not so much. I don't think my reflux symptoms are severe. I tend to use rennies as I find gaviscon bloats me and gives me wind.

I do feel rather phlegmy today which might not have helped.

@Cacee3029 Sleep apnea isn’t just heavy snoring. DH makes all sorts of weird choking and gulping noises in his sleep! It’s basically when you stop breathing for short periods in your sleep, which most of the time, sufferers don’t notice. But at times it can wake you up, hence the choking.

Before DH was diagnosed, the other symptoms were that he’d wake up feeling horrendous every morning. Always had a dry mouth and headache, like a hangover and was knackered all the time.

Thank you! As far as I know I don't have any of that. Dp is the lightest sleeper and is often awake much later than me in our bedroom and he hasn't mentioned it anyway.. I do get occasional headaches but not too regularly 💕
