A family member has offered to look after my 6 month old whilst I return to work next Spring. They have a large rottweiler. I've asked them to look after my baby at our house, where all her things are and I feel it is safer away from the dog. They've declined and said it has to be at their house with the dog. Aibu?

Forgot to mention this will only be for 1 day per week

YANBU to worry and ask that, but of course they are also not BU to say no. Can you use a nursery?

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 28/11/2021 10:47

Get a childminder or nursery.... not worth the worry hassle or arguments

Palavah · 28/11/2021 10:48

You're not being unreasonable but neither are they.

You'll need to find some alternative childcare if you're not happy with what they're offering.

Most dog people wouldn't leave a large dog at home alone for more than half a day. Yanbu but neither are they.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 28/11/2021 10:58

What are you paying them to look after your child? If you’re just using them for free childcare, you don’t get to dictate the conditions really. Sounds as if you’d be better off using a formal childcare setting.

Sciurus83 · 28/11/2021 10:59

Just say no and pay for nursery

GaolBhoAlba · 28/11/2021 11:01

Your expectations of an unpaid carer are unreasonable. The only way to call (most of) the shots is to pay someone.

SillyLittleBiscuit · 28/11/2021 11:03

It’s not going to work is it? Who’d look after their dog?

WayneKorr · 28/11/2021 11:07

neither of you are

You are both being unreasonable. Find a different arrangement. If you want to put conditions in you need a contract, which means you have to pay.

Shoxfordian · 28/11/2021 11:28

Sounds like you need to pay for childcare instead

FluffyBooBoo · 28/11/2021 11:29

They are not being unreasonable to make the offer on their terms. It is their dog, and is a member of their family. Dogs are not supposed to be left alone for more than four hours.

You won't be unreasonable to decline and makes other arrangements.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 28/11/2021 11:31

Neither of you are being unreasonable.

They're not going to leave their dog all day so if you're not happy with the arrangement then the onus is on you to find an alternative. They're doing you a favour so can set the terms.

Bluntness100 · 28/11/2021 11:31

I think either accept th offer as is or decline. You can’t force them to do it at your house.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 28/11/2021 11:31

If you're not happy then you'll have to pay for childcare elsewhere. Simple really

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 28/11/2021 11:32

Why is the dog owner being unreasonable?!
ilovesooty · 28/11/2021 11:39

If you don't like what's on offer you need to consider alternative provision.

user1471457751 · 28/11/2021 11:59

Do you expect them to leave the dog locked in the house all day with no company and no access to the outside to do their business? If its so important to you then offer to pay a dog walker to come in twice during the day.

For what it's worth, me and my siblings were raised in a home with big dogs just like many children and we were all fine. It depends more on how the dog has been raised and treated which determines the threat they pose.

BlueTouchPaper · 28/11/2021 12:04

I'd get a childminder or nursery. No way I'd leave my child in a house with a dog regardless of size.

MadeOfStarStuff · 28/11/2021 12:22

Neither of you are BU but this isn’t going to work so you will need to pay for proper childcare

Aprilx · 28/11/2021 12:28

I wouldn’t use child care with a resident Rottweiler either, but I can also understand a dog owner not wanting to leave their dog alone all day. This isn’t going to work, neither of you are being unreasonable.
