Hi,

A child in my little ones nursery had scarlet fever and was in the day my little one goes in, nursery sent out an email about it. Since then she has started with a chesty cough, extremely runny nose and her cheeks are red like this. Has had a bit of a temp but came down with calpol and she hasn’t had that since. Does this look like a scarlet fever rash? Or what else could it be? Her skin isn’t usually like this! Thanks

Could it be slapped cheek? My dd caught that at about this age. Hope she is better soon.

Scarlet fever rash is like sandpaper.

If you think it is SF you need to see a doctor for antibiotics.

Mylittlepotofjoy · 27/11/2021 20:02

Could be or it could be slapped face rash . Have hher glands come up on the sides of her neck ? Does she have a sore throat both are signs of scarlet fever

Sunflower300719 · 27/11/2021 20:03

@Tangletester oh yes it could be I didn’t think of that. I will have a read up on that. Thank you

@Aroundtheworldin80moves thank you. Her cheeks don’t feel rough to touch but do look dry and there is no rash any where else like her chest or tummy, just her face. Also I’m not sure how long the incubation period is as the child with SF had this a week ago so not sure if the incubation period could be that long

You need to check with your GP. Scarlet fever is a notifiable disease. Easily treated with antibiotics though. "Strawberry tongue" was the giveaway with my son (plus the fact he'd been playing with a kid who turned out to be contagious!)

JumperandJacket · 27/11/2021 20:04

Does she have a rash on her body? Red cheeks are common with scarlet fever but the sandpaper rash is generally tummy and chest.

Sunflower300719 · 27/11/2021 20:05

@Mylittlepotofjoy I can feel them on the side of her neck if I press. I think her throat is sore as she has been pointing to it and getting upset. She is 2

@A8mint sorry I will gladly have the post moved but in my experience I haven’t had any replies on general health and the child health one before so I posted here

@A8mint

There are boards specifically for child health. You dont need to clutter up AIBU by posting everything here
Charming. Maybe cut her some slack? She's obviously worried and posting for traffic. It literally makes no difference to your life whatsoever.

Scarlet fever/German measles will start with a fever, over 38c and a sore throat, rash will start a few days later behind ears and on face, and move down the trunk of the body and eventually all over the body.

If mmr has been given, likely hood of that diagnosis is rare, BUT my DC had mmr and a booster and recently presented with all symptoms but due to having vaccine they wouldn't test to see what the 'actual' cause was and DC diagnosed with Viral Exanthem.

deedsnotwords11 · 27/11/2021 20:17

White tongue could be a sign of scarlet fever - my dd started with strawberry tongue (I didn't notice until the doctor showed me) then it got a noticeable white coating and the doctors said it was also a sign.

Electriq · 27/11/2021 20:18

Also, there was no specific treatment, just usual keep hydrated, calpol for fever.

My DC was so poorly for 3 weeks.

JumperandJacket · 27/11/2021 20:20

@Electriq Scarlet fever is a completely different illness from German measles and needs prompt treatment with antibiotics.

And there’s no need for you to clutter up OP’s thread with pointless gobshite like this @A8mint. OP was worried, wanted advice and went to the most populated area of Mumsnet.
SmallProvincial · 27/11/2021 20:26

If you suspect it is slapped cheek, please be vigilant as it's very dangerous for pregnant women to contract it.

CherylStreep · 27/11/2021 20:29

My dd had scarlet fever 3 times before the age of 4. Symptoms: off form and sore throat first, then rash starting at back of neck and moving down her back. Was also prone to impetigo. Apparently all 3 (scarlet fever, strep throat and impetigo) are related. Scarlet fever is a different illness to German measles (Rubella).

Electriq · 27/11/2021 20:40

@JumperandJacket oh duh, your right! Its Rubella I was thinking of 🤦🏽‍♀️ sorry OP

Frazzled50yrold · 27/11/2021 23:13

Apparently there's lots of hand, foot and mouth disease at present. My grandson had it and started with diarrhoea, high temperature and flaming red cheeks but the blisters developed fairly quickly.

BoreOfWhabylon · 27/11/2021 23:24

Call 111. Tell them she has fever, rash and a sore throat and has been incontact with scarlet fever.

@A8mint I've reported your post. Hope you get banned.
