To think where is the empathy?

This week alone I have seen:

Horrible, horrible comments about the people who drowned in the English Channel this week. Not just political stuff but people actually laughing and joking about it.

A story in a local paper about a woman who sadly died from covid. People instantly in the comments talking about how it's scaremongering and propaganda. As if the family need to see that on a story about their loved one.

Endless threads on here where people are just sticking the boot in and insulting others when they are down. Nothing remotely helpful or constructive about their comments, just sheer nastiness. That's nothing new though.

I feel really depressed with the lack of empathy and in most cases, utter maliciousness of some people. Yes I probably need to step away from social media but is this really the world I am raising my kids in? When did people become so cold? How are we supposed to ignore it? I've given up trying to challenge it as people are so pigheaded it's pointless.

You sound jealous of your sister wowb

No, she doesn’t Confused

Most people are decent. They probably do t spend much time here Grin

There was a guy in our town who used to beg by the railway station - turns out he drove a BMW and lived in a nice flat - lived next door to my sister. He was pretty convincing- never know, your sister might be right.

Antsgomarching · 28/11/2021 19:58

But yeah people are sometimes assholes. I used to be a lot more positive that people were generally good but not so much anymore. You can believe people shouldn’t be trying to cross the chanel from a safe country whilst also feeling horrified by the loss of life and the brutality of their deaths. If you are mocking it then you are absolutely heartless.
@TractorAndHeadphones not at all, I love my Dsis but she is a very cold person who lacks empathy it causes her unhappiness, she sees negativity in everything.
My other siblings call her the ice queen, we love her but she is a ruthless character.
You know your sister better, but what you've written in itself doesn't make her a cold person.
Homelessness : there's a well known programme about it
metro.co.uk/2019/03/21/fake-rough-sleeper-who-earns-up-to-600-a-day-says-begging-brings-in-more-than-working-8975704/
Foreign aid : Why is not wanting to donate to a specific cause which pays staff high salaries bad? She can spend her money how she chooses. By this logic doesn't matter if she donated a million pounds to UK children not wanting to give foreign aid is cold.

If she said homeless people are lazy and it's their fault, or foreigners don't deserve aid over 'our people' fair enough but all the things you mention aren't cruel or merciless. Unlike people mocking the drowned.

in RL I don't see a lack of empathy like what the OP mentioned I see the opposite ; people getting angry at their causes not being supported.

Try reading the Brexit or anti Tory threads.

I was a big social media user until recently. I realised that I was spending my whole time feeling anxious or irritated about what I'd seen online or the comments or whatever issues were being raised or getting into unpleasant debates defending against unkind people. I stopped using social media totally about a month ago. After a few slightly itchy days of detox I've been more relaxed than I have in years. The original idea of social media is wonderful, but it's grown into a whole different beast now.

This is a good idea.

I’m ok as long as I stay off Facebook nut job groups and just stick to things I need to know. Twitter is similar - it’s too easy to end up in a scrolling spiral of anger.

@TractorAndHeadphones I agree.
I'm not going to get into her views online though she agrees with Katie Hopkins and Donald Trump a lot. Grin
