Hi all I need advise
I’ve got a terrible toothache and was in agony. Got into boots to get something to relieve the pain but all I could think is ibuprofen extra strength gel and without realizing I shouldn’t use it for mouth I applied it to the sore area which obviously touched part of my inner cheek, tongue and gum. Now a few hours later I could feel the area where the gel was applied got quite flaky and feels like ulcers? Not sure what to do?? It didn’t relieve pain either so I’m still in agony 😭😭

Ring 111

SusieBob · 27/11/2021 17:54

Rinse your mouth out thoroughly and give 111 a call.

I think I made it worse by rinsing my mouth with salted water as I found this advice online

Does this stuff really happen to people? How can you think you can just put it in your mouth? Don’t people read instructions?! Or just, know things?! Sorry, this isn’t helpful in the least, but my astonishment has leaked out.

RobbieWeirdicht · 27/11/2021 18:39

Not much help with your ibuprofen gel problem - sorry! but I got a tube of this in for emergencies during lockdown.

I haven't had to use it (yet!) but the reviews sound really good.

The pain from bad toothache can make you do almost anything.
gamerchick · 27/11/2021 18:41

Yeah you need oragel.

I'd probably seek medical advice tbh OP.

ThirdElephant · 27/11/2021 18:42

Call 111. You might need checking out.

HannahsLife · 27/11/2021 18:43

Definitely get Orajel. It's amazing!

So sorry you're in pain. It's understandable you just used anything!

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 27/11/2021 19:00

Definitely Orajel but get the Max one from behind the pharmacy counter. It’s a bloody miracle for temporary relief.

There’s usually a phone line on products so you could maybe call them and see what they advise if 111 has a busy wait time. I’m sure it’s happened before and will happen again so they may have some solid advice.

sometimes pain makes ypu do stupid things. i once had tooth pain so bad that i wanted to rip my teeth out (actually tried on the painful tooth)

endes up rubbing a super hot chilli pepper on the gum and then ice. 😂 but would never suggest anyone do that... wasnt great haha

softblueface · 28/11/2021 08:16

I know this was yesterday, but if you have cloves in the cupboard then chew one of them of you can bear it, or if not at least rub it on the affected area. It really is amazing pain relief, tried and tested.

Ilovenutellaaaaa · 28/11/2021 08:25

When i had a sore mouth and bonjella wasn't easing it i used Colgate peroxyl mouthwash...takes the sting instantly out of it and feels like instant relief...just don't swallow it, switch it around your mouth especially over the sore areas and you should feel the pain die down and numb

Ilovenutellaaaaa · 28/11/2021 08:27

Just want to add I got my Colgate peroxyl mouthwash from superdrug and I think it's sold in Sainsbury's too

Theunamedcat · 28/11/2021 08:28

Clove oil for the toothache but it might aggravate the gum and cheek area even more

Do you have an appointment with an emergency dentist

Bobbybobbins · 28/11/2021 08:33

Ring 111 they are good in these type of situations.

Not a very helpful or sympathetic post but I think you knew that already. To answer your question: yes, stuff like this does happen to people. I had a bad cold that was making my brain really foggy. I went to the medicine cupboard to get some paracetamol. Without thinking I took the next day's dose of my prescription medication out of my pill box and knocked it back. Called pharmacist for advice, who called an ambulance, which then took me to hospital. I was absolutely fine, but just to show it only takes a momentary lapse in attention to do something really stupid and potentially harmful...
Porfre · 28/11/2021 08:34

Yeah I think you need to see a dentist

dottiedodah · 28/11/2021 08:58

Just call 111 and they will give you advice .Obv make a Dental Appt and stress how much pain you are in .Paramol is a strong codeine based painkiller ,only avaliable over the counter at the Chemist .Check with them first obv .(only able to be taken for max of 3 days I think) Also when I had very bad tooth pain ,the 111 nurse advised me to sleep sitting up with lots of pillows .Takes the pressure off apparently .Hope you feel better soon

CarrotSticks19 · 28/11/2021 12:44

You need to see a dentist

You might have burnt your tissues with the ibuprofen gel. Make sure you rinse the area thoroughly now but not much can be done at this stage. See a dentist to check both your tooth and your gums/mucosa in the area

Thehermitspermit · 28/11/2021 13:17

I know toothache can make you do some crazy things - the pain is so intense you can't think straight

I think you do need to get your mouth seen to, but you probably know this

I have a severe dental phobia so have dealt with my own toothache a lot, if for whatever reason you can't get to a dentist:

Oragel extra strength
Clove oil
Sensodyne toothpaste rubbed into the sore area
Corsodyl mouthwash
Hot salt water rinsed through as much as you need to

If you are pretty sure it's an infection and not just an exposed nerve, get yourself onto the online clinic website and go through the questionarre - get yourself some antibiotics for the infection.

I can't help with the mouth injury but I can guarantee it will heal eventually. You just need to make sure that also doesn't get infected.

Thehermitspermit · 28/11/2021 13:19

Also to add you can take paracetamol and codeine combo with an ibuprofen codeine combo - you can get both of these from the pharmacy. Don't take additional paracetamol and ibuprofen products if you are using these

ThinWomansBrain · 28/11/2021 13:20

Go back to Boots and ASK the pharmacist?
