Anyone else been made fun of because of their name/surname?

It’s a long, European surname. Once a man actually laughed down the phone at it when I had to give my name and address.

Working at a school, a lady asked me, “Really?! So do the kids call you miss _?!”
Well yeah, that is my name so..

Or in other jobs/school I’ve had people read out lists of full names but only read my first name.

Always remember a girl behind me in the lunch queue at school sniggering when my surname came up on the card machine.

Even in some jobs people have said, “Yeah, I’m just gonna call you by your first name.”

It used to get me down when I was younger but I realise it’s their problem. I have no issue with people asking how to pronounce it or commenting on how it’s different.

Anyone else had this? Just find people so rude sometimes.

People should make the effort to learn how to pronounce unfamiliar names. Our doctors practice shorten any long and unfamiliar names to make it easier for patients to say. I really object to it. The owner of our local convenience store goes by a short common English name as people can’t remember his actual Asian name. He’s had the shop for forty years and his real name isn’t difficult. It would really annoy me in your position. It’s rude and a bit like saying you don’t matter enough to make the effort. Martina Navratilova wasn’t happy about people getting her name wrong and showed it. Good for her.

I shorten my name because it has a sound non-Welsh speakers can't make. It's not really the same as Martina Navratiolva who has no difficult sounds in her name, it just needs to be learnt.

I have an unusual first name and an uncomplicated surname. School was OK..... I've just never ever met anybody with the same name. However, when illiterates see the first name, they just go wordblind and struggle to pronounce any of it. Duh ! I prefer them to at least try the first name which I correct and then when I say the surname they realise how simple it is. Phonetically, the first name is hard to pronounce. When anybody gets it right, they go way up in my estimation as very very intelligent Grin. I ALWAYS try unusual names and would never disrespect someone by asking whether I can abbreviate their name or call them something else. ...rudeConfused.

First name - ditzy lead in a very famous book
First name plus surname - stage name of very famous American rock star (male)

My name has always been subject to jovial comment.

I'll bet you're not particularly a fan of Chubby Brown, either....

Yep. I changed mine by deed poll. I didn't feel forced to, I disliked it too, but the comments people made over the years definitely didn't help.
