Queue etiquette

Hi,
If you've just been served in a shop and a minute later you discover a mistake on your receipt.
Should you

A) Go to the till say to the next person in the queue, do they mind, you've already queued but there was a mistake.
B) Rejoin the queue at the start?

I realise this is minor in the scheme of things, but I would like your opinion.
Thanks.

Rejoin

JayAlfredPrufrock · 26/11/2021 21:28

Go straight to the till. Their mistake. I ain’t queuing again.

Porfre · 26/11/2021 21:30

If you want food. Or need a napkin or some sauce then straight to the till.

If you're about to leave and everything finished. And you've already eaten then I think back of the queue

EileenGC · 26/11/2021 21:31

Straight to the till in between costumers.

But then the queues are 10 mins+ at my supermarket and we have no self-scanning counters.

dementedpixie · 26/11/2021 21:31

If there's a customer services desk I'd go there

thumpingrug · 26/11/2021 21:33

depends on the size of the queue. If it were long or slow Id probably just butt in

Porfre · 26/11/2021 21:33

@dementedpixie

If there's a customer services desk I'd go there
Ok but would you join the queue at the customer service or for straight to the till?
HeronLanyon · 26/11/2021 21:34

There are variables. Time you’ve been away. Whether these in the queue will know you and just been served. If eg the person currently being served is elderly. How long the queue actually is and how long each is likely to take, how much time you have when they have made the mistake , whether there is a customer service desk nearby who could deal with it. Loads of variables. Can see it both ways.
No question when I have gone to front I’ve always explained and asked person at front if I can just sort out problem.

Lemonjiffy · 26/11/2021 21:34

Straight to the front and I am a stickler for queue etiquette. It’s not fair to have to wait again.

CouncilHousedAndViolentBaby · 26/11/2021 21:35

Straight to the front, you'd look a bit silly queuing again surely?

sorryforswearing · 26/11/2021 21:36

I’d go straight to the front and apologise to the next person in the queue letting them know I’ve just been served and they’ve made an error. x

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 26/11/2021 21:39

Depends how long the queue is. If it's just a few people, might as well just wait in line again and save the hassle. If it's really long then maybe just go to the till.

Although, who I am kidding, I personally would just go home because I have crushing social anxiety and wouldn't know what to say!

Slippy78 · 26/11/2021 21:59

It all depends on how long it will take to sort out the mistake.
If it's just a McDonald's 'can I get my ketchup' then straight to the front.
If it's going to take a few minutes then back of the queue.

SC3141 · 26/11/2021 22:05

Wow that was quick. Many thanks for all your advice.

Join the queue.

I work on the customer service desk at a supermarket - my entire job is to deal with mistakes/price errors/enquiries/returns etc, so anyone who is already in the queue at my desk has a problem that needs dealing with and they have waited their turn - if you also have a problem you need to join the queue. If anyone tried to jump into an existing queue at my till, without having asked the others waiting if they could queue jump, then I would be sending them to the back of my queue regardless.

Having said that, if it was a smaller shop without a customer service desk then whether I would rejoin the queue would depend on what the problem was ... if it was something that was quickly rectified then I'd try and jump in, but I'd always ask the next person "can I just nip in and ask quick question about my receipt?" first, and if it would take time to deal with then I would rejoin the queue

SickAndTiredAgain · 26/11/2021 22:17

Depends. If they’ve started serving the person behind you, they’d have to cancel everything on that transaction to deal with whatever your issue is, so in that case I wouldn’t expect to go straight to the front. If I’d literally just turned away, spotted it, and turned immediately back, I’d speak to them and just consider it part of my “turn” to be served.

But often, and this was the case when I worked on checkouts, there might be issues that require a supervisor to sort anyway, so customer services may well be where you get sent by the cashier. And of course I’d queue at customer services, why would my issue trump other customer service issues, they may well have queued up once already as well.

SequinnedShawl · 26/11/2021 22:19

Straight back to whomever served you.

woodhill · 26/11/2021 22:24

Exactly especially if they've made the mistake like overcharging you

SC3141 · 26/11/2021 22:40

In Summary:
The majority seem to say, go back to the till but check first with the next person in the queue.
But maybe rejoin the queue, if it's a while since you were served, or if it's a short queue, or if it's a complicated issue you have.
But of course there may be other variables too.
Thank to all.
